Clarke is PSA’s
newest recruit
By Ron P. Coderre
Although the prep school basketball season is more than five months away Putnam Science Academy coach Tom Espinosa is hard at work putting the pieces together for the upcoming 2012-2013 season.
Espinosa announced that he’s secured his second recruit in the person of versatile 6-foot, 5-inch wing player Mairega Clarke from Queens, N.Y. Clarke played last season for Holy Cross High School in New York where he averaged 13 points, 8.6 rebounds and 3 blocked shots per game. He helped lead the Knights to a 24-5 record and the CHSAA Class AA Intersectional Final.
“Mairega is a unique athlete with elite size for a lead guard. He flourishes in the open floor with his supreme burst of quickness and length in attacking the rim. He’s creative one-on-one in the half court and is emerging as a perimeter shooter, all of which makes him extremely difficult to cover,” said Espinosa.
Clarke joins recent recruit 6-11 product Ugur Hortom of Turkey who also committed to attending Putnam Science Academy in the fall. PSA is returning Dayshon Smith, Sergen Kumas and Berkan Tuylu from last year’s team, which posted more than 20 victories for the fourth consecutive season.
“Clarke, along with Hortum and returnee Dayshon Smith, gives us the nucleus for another competitive season this coming year. We’re still in the hunt for a couple more recruits to complete our roster,” said Espinosa.
