Today’s sporty hello goes out to former Putnam Chief of Police Ed Perron. As co-captain of the Putnam Clippers football team in the late ‘50s, Perron was a ferocious lineman. Today, Perron limits his sporting activities to playing golf at Quinnatisset Country Club and following the sporting fortunes of his many grandchildren.
Golf continues to dominate the column during the summer months. June is filled with golf tournaments but it’s nice to occasionally recognize the individual accomplishments of local golfers. Matt Smith, the son of Dale and Peggy Smith of Thompson, recently graduated from the University of Hartford where he enjoyed a stellar four-year career on the links for the Hawks. The Golf Coaches Association of America, of Santa Monica, Calif., recently announced the selection of Smith on the PING 2012 NCAA Division I All-Northeast Division Region team. Smith, who was an All-State golfer at Tourtellotte Memorial High School, is a member at Quinnatisset Country Club, where he works on his game whenever he’s not working to earn money or playing in a tournament. This summer Smith is employed at Connecticut National Golf Club in Putnam where he assists Club Professional Jim West.

The Congregational Church of Putnam Golf Tournament is enjoying an added attraction this year, as the tourney in its 11th year, is now officially has added The Steve Bousquet Memorial Golf Tournament to its name. Once again the event is being co-chaired by church members Charlie Leach and Roger Franklin.
“Steve was a man with a big heart who gave of his time, energy and resources for many essential community efforts. We are grateful to the Bousquet family for allowing us to honor Steve’s memory in this way,” said Co-chairman Leach.
Proceeds will be equally shared with the Bousquet family who will continue to focus on a scholarship program for Putnam and Killingly High School students.
The tournament is scheduled for June 24 at the Raceway Golf Course in Thompson. Billed as the best tournament bargain for its price, the entry fee remains $125 per golfer and $500 per foursome. The entry fee includes a sumptuous Don Hoenig lunch buffet beginning at 11:45 a.m., 18 holes of golf with cart, a starter package, prizes, raffles and all of this followed by a steak dinner. “It’s our feeling that we want to give the golfers a great day, which includes good food and prizes in addition to golf, friendship and camaraderie. We’re looking forward to a great day on the links,” said Co-chairman Franklin.
Sponsorships are available beginning at the Faithful Follower ($75 – Tee) level to the Saint ($1000 – Lunch and Food) level. In between there’s the Angel ($500 – Banner on a hole) level; Disciple ($250 – Cart); and Good Samaritan ($150 – Large Tee) level. The day will also include closest-to-the-pin, hole-in-one, and Par-3 prizes as well as a putting contest.

This tourney is definitely worth the price and it puts the golfer one step closer to heaven although there are no guarantees, according to Pastor Tom Myer.
Locals in Field
for Walter Cosgrove Four-Ball…
A number of local golfers took part over the weekend in what is considered one of the strongest fields to ever take part in the Walter Cosgrove Worcester County Four-Ball Tournament at Green Hill Golf Course. This field is often referred to as the elite golfers from Southern New England.
One of the first pair of golfers to register was the father-son team of Matt and Dale Smith. Last year the Smiths finished third. They also won the Connecticut Father-Son Tournament two years ago. Also in the field is Putnam golfer Brian Bardier, with partner Dave Jones. The pair won the Cosgrove in 2008. Among the more noted Southern New England entries is the team of Frank Vana Jr. of Marlboro CC and R.J. Foley of Mount Pleasant CC, which finished second last year. Also in the field are Dan and Dave Falucci of Cyprian Keyes and former Assumption College standout Bill Cosgrove, nephew of the late Walter Cosgrove and his playing partner Chris Quinn of Worcester CC.
