for scholars

The Putnam Congregational Church celebrated its 11th annual golf tournament in spectacular fashion as 25 foursomes participated in the recently renamed Steve Bousquet Memorial Golf Tournament at the Raceway Golf Club in Thompson. The entire program was excellently choreographed by co-chairmen Roger Franklin and Charlie Leach and the tournament planning committee.
The 2012 championship foursome with a score of 58, which is 14 under par at Raceway, was Roger Lamoureux, the elder and Roger Lamoureux, the younger, Tim St. Onge and Mike Dalpe. In second place, two strokes off the pace at minus 12, was the foursome of Rocky Bedard, Jim Gannon, Dan Langevin and Paul Faucher. The show place went to the Gerardi Insurance group of Ed and Matt Desaulnier, Jay Long and Bob Bernier at nine under par. They won on matching cards.
“We played well as a team. Everyone contributed to our success. The best thing however, is that the church is able to continue its scholarship program thanks to the golfers,” said Lamoureux, the younger.
In combination with the Bousquet family, which was represented by the late Steve Bousquet’s wife Kate, her daughter and son-in-law Matt and Jennifer Weeks, her son and daughter-in-law Jeff and Kalin Bousquet and her brother-in-law Bill Gardner, the church presented four scholarships to students from Killingly and Putnam. The recipients from Putnam High School were Haley Perron and Joe Kroell and from KHS Dax Rich and Samantha Tickey.
“We’re pleased to add our family name to this tournament because of the good work it does in providing scholarships. Education is so important and the support of the golfers is very much appreciated,” said Kate Bousquet.
On the links, the Long Drive champions were Katie Deary and Roger Lamoureux, the elder, who also captured the closest-to-the-pin honors on the 17th hole. Other closest-to-the-pin winners were Wayne Grzelicki (4th hole), Mike Blinn (9th) and Joe Pontuso (14th). Par three challenge winners were Derrieth Adams (4th), Guy LaHaie (9th), Moe Abasciano (14th) and Bill Gardner (17th). Putting contest winner was Dennis Alvers.
“We put in a great deal of time and energy in preparing for this day. Roger and I couldn’t do this by ourselves. We’re very happy with the help we receive from the committee and the volunteers,” said co-chairman Leach.
According to the organizers, the tournament is expected to turn a profit of approximately $8,000. The results have encouraged the committee to schedule next year’s tournament for June 23.
