PUTNAM — When Bradley Playhouse directors Gregory Brock and Kathleen Atwood held auditions for “The Sound of Music,” they knew they would be casting one of the best-loved musicals for and about family. Little did they know, the production would literally turn into a family affair.
As the cast of any show goes through weeks of rehearsals, they come to feel like a family and many form lasting friendships. The actors who will present the Bradley’s production have a head start on the family feeling.
Preston Arnold, a former military man, was cast as Captain von Trapp. Von Trapp’s 16-year-old daughter Liesl is being played by Arnold’s actual daughter, Mary. His wife, LaDelle, was cast as Mother Abbess and their son, Tristan, is in the ensemble.
There are three parent child pairs as well. Diana Daugherty plays Sister Berthe and her daughter Kiersten Goates is Marta, the second youngest von Trapp child. Mary Ann Kolakowski appears as a nun and her daughter Elizabeth is a postulant. Tricia Renaud also plays a nun and her son, Jordan, is Kurt von Trapp.
There are also onstage-off stage pairings as well. Maggie Pollard, who plays Maria, is the daughter of music director Diane Pollard. Long-time Plainfield kindergarten teacher Marian Marchesseault is in the ensemble and her sons Mike and Steve make sure everything goes smoothly as members of the stage crew.
“The Sound of Music” opens July 27 and runs for three weekends at the playhouse on Front Street.  Tickets are $21 for adults and $18 for seniors and students.
