PUTNAM — The Interfaith Human Services of Putnam (IHSP)-Daily Bread board recapped a successful year and thanked their volunteers.
Shawn Johnston, president of the Board of Directors, noted that in the last year, IHSP-Daily Bread has made significant steps, increasing outreach in many areas of service. He praised volunteer Diaper Bank Coordinator Helen Ferland for her work in expanding Putnam’s diaper bank — one that now serves more than half a dozen towns in northeastern Connecticut. Ferland’s dedication resulted in donations of more than 40,000 diapers earlier this year.
With the help of local business and the Putnam Congregational Church, 2012’s “Empty Bowl Project” brought the entire community together and raised over $3,000 for the food pantry.
Local organizations like the Putnam Elks, Rotary and Lions made monetary donations that go so far to help IHSP-Daily Bread support friends and neighbors in Putnam, Woodstock and Pomfret, he said. In addition, work has progressed on providing more fresh fruits and vegetables to those visiting Daily Bread, word has spread about the community garden, clients can take advantage of the Connecticut Food Bank’s Mobile Food Pantry, the Homeless Assistance Program and more.
According to Ann Kathi Peterson, secretary and Community Resource coordinator, 85,000 meals were served to families in need last year in the tri-town area.
Volunteers thanked include: Tony DeAngelo, of Fortress Fiduciary Company in New Haven, for assistance in matters of taxation and incorporation.
Dot Burnworth of Sawmill Pottery in Putnam, helped with fund-raising by providing hundreds of bowls for empty bowl suppers.
Denise LeFleur, long-time member of the Board of Directors, was also honored.
