Sr. Marie Anne
Vigneault, DHS
PUTNAM — Sr. Marie Anne Vigneault, 95, a member of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit, died Aug. 5, 2012 at The Holy Spirit Health Care Center.
Born on June 10, 1917, in St. Valère, Canada, the daughter of Henri and Rose D. (Geoffrey) Vigneault, she entered religious life in 1934 and made profession at the Motherhouse in St. Brieuc, France on Sept. 2, 1937.  She was then known as Sr. Rose Henri.
She was a dietician for most of her religious life and between 1937 and 1974 she was assigned in turn to St. Joseph Convent, Pawtucket, R.I.., Annhurst College in S. Woodstock,  St. Mary Convent, Jewett City, St. Anne Convent, Swanton, Vt/, the Provincial House in Putnam, St. Joseph Villa, Putnam, and St. Joseph Convent, Burlington, Vt/.
In 1974 she was assigned to St. Joseph Guest House in New Haven, where she did domestic work.  In 1979 she was assigned to St. Clare Home in Newport, R.I., where she served initially as a nurses’ aide and later as dietician until 1998 at which time she retired to the Provincial House in Putnam.
She leaves nieces and nephews, all of Canada, and a cousin, Rita Plouffe of Chicopee, Mass.
Calling hours at the Provincial House will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 9 with a Prayer Service at 7:15 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Aug. 10 at Holy Spirit Provincial House followed by burial in St. Mary Cemetery in Putnam. Ruth Margaret
Sundstrom Hay
WOODSTOCK — Ruth Margaret Sundstrom Hay, 87, of Woodstock died Aug. 4, 2012, at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown. She was the wife of the late William “Scotty” Hay. He died in 2003. They were married in 1963.
She was born on Aug. 28, 1924, in Worcester, daughter of the late Bertil and Elvira (Swanberg) Sundstrom.
She graduated from Woodstock Academy then went to North Park College and Bible Institute. Ruth and her husband were very active members of the Evangelical Covenant Church of Woodstock. Early on Ruth worked summers at covenant churches in the Middle East Conference as a Bible School director. After college she worked for Trinity Covenant Church of Manchester, Cromwell Children’s Home as a counselor and later working for Day Kimball Hospital in the medical records department.
She leaves three step sons: Douglas Hay (Gloria) of Upland, Calif., Bruce Hay (Donna) of E. Killingly and Donald Hay (Anna) of E. Killingly; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a step daughter Joan.
A Memorial Service will be at 2 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Evangelical Covenant Church of Woodstock, 24 Child Hill Road, Woodstock. Donations: Benevolent Care Fund at Covenant Village, 52 Missionary Road, Cromwell, CT 06416. Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove St., Putnam.

Lillian M. Hasiotis
BROOKLYN — Lillian M. Hasiotis, 90, died Aug. 4, 2012, at home in Brooklyn.
Born Dec. 30, 1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Lillian (Jump) Besterman.
Lillian lived in Bricktown, N.J.; she worked in the Bricktown school system as an administrative secretary. Lillian was a resident of Brooklyn for the past 25 years.
She leaves many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband George Sharples, second husband Arthur Hasiotis and a daughter Lillian Bacon.

Raymond R. LeClair,
WWII vet
PUTNAM — Raymond R. LeClair, 87, of Putnam, died Aug. 2, 2012, at Matulaitis Nursing Home of Putnam. He was the husband of the late Cecelia LeClair. She died July 10, 2012.  He was born Aug. 10, 1924, in Putnam, son of the late Pierre and Rose (Labossiere) LeClair. 
He was a veteran of WWII serving with the U.S. Navy as a boatswain mate that included the invasions of Africa, Sicily, Salerno, Anzio and D-Day invasion of Normandy.
He married Cecelia on April 27, 1946. After his service he was the owner of John’s Package Store in town. He was a member of the LST #1 Association and a member of the Putnam Lions Club. 
He leaves  sister-in-law Helen Flibbert of Dudley; nephews Gerald Flibbert, David Flibbert; niece Debra Toporoff; godson Paul Standrowicz.
A Memorial Service for Raymond and Cecelia at 11 a.m. Aug. 10 at Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove St., Putnam. They will have a private burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Webster. Donations: Putnam Lions Club, PO Box 535, Putnam, CT 06260.

Walter Robert
Battey
DANIELSON — Walter Robert Battey, 97, of Danielson, died July 31, 2012, at Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam. He was born Oct. 18, 1914, in N. Kingston, R.I., son of the late William E. and Agnes (Grinnell) Battey. Mr. Battey worked as an experimental gear cutter at Pratt & Whitney and also as a farmer.
He leaves his brothers, William Battey of Foster, R.I., Herbert Battey of Chepachet, and Edward Battey (Ruth) of Coventry, R.I.; nephews and niece, Robert B. Battey, Kenneth L. Battey, Edward H. Cully, Brian S. Battey, William Cuomo and Ann Parent. He was predeceased by sister, Lillian Cuomo and nephew, William Battey Jr.
The funeral was in S. Killingly Cemetery, Danielson. Tillinghast Funeral Home, Danielson.

Betty Johnson,

N. GROSVENORDALE — Betty Johnson, 68, of N. Grosvenordale died July 30, 2012, at Regency Heights of Danielson. She was born Sept. 20, 1943, in Rockville, daughter of the late George Edward and Marie Elizabeth (Griffin) Jondrow.
She loved NASCAR, reading, country music, cooking and baking.
She leaves her children, Christopher Darling of Manchester, Lisa Lima (Donald) of Dayville and Ruth Tetreault (Paul) of Putnam; grandchildren, Shawn Beaudreault (Beth)  of Putnam, Sarah Lima of Putnam, Rebecca Lima of Oxford, Mass., Heather Slye/Pierce of Killingly, Richard Slye Jr. of Enfield and Paige Darling of Griswold; great grandchild Hayden Lima Field. She was predeceased by her sons Timothy and Jamie Darling.

‘Tom’ Mazzarella,
WWII, Korean war vet
PLAINFIELD — Gaetano “Tom” A. Mazzarella, 91, of Norwich, died July 29, 2012, at the home of Karen Mazzarella of Killingly.
Tom, was born Sept. 19, 1920, in Danielson, the son of the late Nicandro and Marguerite Mazzarella. On June 3, 1944 he married Florence L. Conley of Norwich.
Tom served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII and the Korean War and later with the CT National Guard. He worked for many years at Electric Boat. After he retired he worked part time for the City of Norwich at the Norwich Golf Course and the Ice Rink.
He and his brothers spoke about the wars at many schools in the area.
He leaves his son’s family, Guy and Viola Mazzarella of Old Lyme; his daughter’s family, Jaimey and Terry Romanoff of Preston; grandchildren Anthony (Tony) Mazzarella, Jeff Blayman, and Melissa Blayman; his sister Marie Robertson of Palm Springs; his companion Karen Mazzarella. Tom was predeceased by his wife, Florence, and his brothers Henry, Phillip, and James.

Robert Victor
Olson
DANIELSON — Robert Victor Olson, 79, of Danielson, died Aug. 1, 2012, at Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam. He was born in Providence, son of the late John Eric and Lucille M. (Frederickson) Olson.
Mr. Olson owned and operated Connecticut Flatstone for more than 50 years. He was a member of the Morgan Horse Association.
He leaves his companion of 37 years, Mary P. Russell of Danielson; stepson, George M. Viveiros of Danielson; brother, Richard E. Olson of E. Greenwich, R.I.; nieces and nephews including nephew, Matthew Olson of E. Greenwich
Burial was in E. Greenwich Cemetery. Tillinghast Funeral Home, Danielson.

John ‘Jack’ Romanoff,

PLAINFIELD — John “Jack” Romanoff, 73, died July 31, 2012.
He was born Dec. 3, 1938, in Putnam, son of the late William J. and Sally (Havunen) Romanoff. He was raised in Canterbury and later moved to Florida. He returned to Connecticut and lived in Plainfield since 2005.
He was a member of the U.S. army Reserves for eight years. He worked in the aircraft industry, later C&M Corp. in Wauregan. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Canterbury.
He leaves his partner Marjorie Hall of Plainfield; a brother, Robert w. Romanoff of Milford; a sister Patricia Portnoy of Cranston, R.I.
A Memorial Service was Aug. 4 at  Dougherty Bros. Funeral, Plainfield with burial in Carey Cemetery, Canterbury.

Veronica Schremser
WEBSTER — Veronica Catherine (Walsh) Schremser, 90, died Aug. 1, 2012, at Oakwood Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Webster.
She was the wife of 52 years to the late Eugene Louis Schremser.
Veronica was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of the late Joseph and Irene (Connelly) Walsh. She settled in Webster in 1946 living at Killdeer Island for over 50 years. Veronica worked at several local companies and retired from Automatic Rolls of New England in 1986. She was a past member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Webster and a member of the Killdeer Island Club.
Veronica was of indomitable spirit, great humor and a generous heart. She met her husband through war time correspondence excerpts of which were published and are now in the Missouri Historical Museum and the National Archives in Washington D.C.
She leaves two sons; Dennis Schremser and Duane Schremser both of Dudley; three daughters, Ruth Ann Williamson of St. Louis, Diane Kuszewski and Suzanne Vasale both of Webster; two sisters, Emma Kalland of Tennessee and Josephine Healy of Connecticut; 11 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren.
The Memorial Service is at 11 a.m. Aug. 9 in Zion Lutheran Church, Oxford, with burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Webster. Donations: Patients Activity Fund at Oakwood Nursing Center, 11 Pontiac Ave., Webster, MA. 01570. Bartel Funeral Home & Chapel, Dudley.
