Ban on burning in place until further notice
PUTNAM — A “Ban on Burning” has been imposed by the Putnam Fire Marshal in accordance with Town of Putnam Ordinance.
A Ban on Burning has been imposed by the Fire Marshal beginning today, October 28, 2024, and shall remain in effect until further notice. The unusually dry weather is causing all outside recreational fires to be considered as hazardous. Since the elevated fire danger has been of concern, the Putnam Fire Marshal’s Office and the local fire departments have received numerous complaints from concerned citizens about open burning and recreational campfires.
This Ban shall include the use of all fire pits, campfires, and the kindling and use of flame outdoors.
The Ban will remain in effect until weather conditions are considered to be safe. The State of Connecticut DEEP has already imposed a similar Ban for all State Parks.
The combination of recent dry weather and very dry ground will continue to make conditions favorable for wildfire development today. Minimum relative humidity values are expected to range between 25 to 45 percent today, along with light north winds. Fire danger is expected to be highest on Thursday and may be high again on Friday if forecasted showers do not provide any significant relief from the very dry conditions.
Persons who fail to comply with this order may be subject to fines as written in the Town of Putnam Ordinance.
When conditions return to favorable for recreational fires the Fire Marshal will lift the Ban with notification in the form of a press release. Until that time, we ask for your cooperation and understanding. Our goal is to keep the residents and visitors of Putnam safe and prevent the unnecessary response to an incident that could pose a threat to them and Putnam’s First Responders.
