Putnam High honors veterans with flag ceremony and celebration
Putnam High School kicked off its annual Veterans Day celebration with a special breakfast and classroom visits, where local veterans shared their personal experiences with students. The morning culminated in a moving flag ceremony and program to recognize the service and sacrifice of those who have served our country.
“On behalf of our students and staff, we wanted to show our appreciation for the sacrifices and efforts you have put forward on behalf of our community and country,” PHS Civics Teacher John Allen said. “Many of those visiting PHS today served in foreign lands under extraordinary circumstances. They didn’t do it for glory or recognition. They did it because they believed in protecting our Constitution and country.” Breakfast, generously donated by local businesses, was a time for veterans to connect with students and faculty. Veterans then visited classrooms to discuss their time in the military and the importance of service. PHS Class of ’24 alum Colin Martin, who is currently serving in the Marine Corps, surprised his younger brother Aidan by visiting his classroom and speaking with students about his experience. The flag-raising ceremony was led by PHS junior Madison Lamothe, who introduced Marine Colin Martin and Air Force veteran Michael Rocchetti to raise the American flag. The PHS a cappella group then performed the national anthem.
Following the Pledge of Allegiance led by Navy veteran Al Joslin, Putnam Mayor Barney Seney, who served in the Army, addressed the crowd. “The most important thing you can do today is to thank veterans for their service.” Seney said. The a cappella group closed the ceremony with a rendition of “God Bless America.” “Thank you to everyone from the different branches represented today, and their families, for the sacrifices that they have made to protect our way of life and freedom,” Principal Heather Taylor said. “We honor you, and your service.” The event was a moving tribute that allowed Putnam High School students to express their appreciation for local veterans and their service to the country.
