Golf course fire ruled accidental
PUTNAM — The fire that that badly damaged a Putnam golf course club house has been ruled accidental.
Oct. 28 the Quinebaug Valley Emergency Communications received a 911 call from a golf course employee who said there was smoke in the clubhouse at 136 Chase Rd., Connecticut National Golf Club, dispatching the East Putnam Fire Department. Approximately 2 minutes later a second call reported an active fire in the building which prompted a mutual aid response. An attempt was made by employees to extinguish the fire using fire extinguishers, but the fire was already too advanced. Fire crews were able to hold the fire to the basement and ballroom.
After an investigation by the Putnam Fire Marshal’s Office it was determined that, due to an equipment failure, power lines on the golf course property drooped making contact with the cable TV wire which fed high voltage into the clubhouse modem located in the basement. As a result, an accidental electrical fire ensued.
There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians and the fire was brought under control in just under an hour. Fire, smoke, and water damage to the basement and the main level of the structure is significant with the worst damage occurring to the ballroom.
