Robert  Nelson Sr.,

Korean war vet

THOMPSON — Robert Gunnar Nelson, 76, died March 14, 2014, after a battle with cancer. Robert was born March 3, 1938, in Willimantic the son of the late Gunnar G. and Mary (Zwierecki) Nelson.  

His unique personality and sense of humor kept everyone guessing. As a teen he worked in the thread mills in Willimantic, saving for his college education. He served in the Army National Guard during the Korean Conflict. His career in mechanical engineering began at Torrington Manufacturing, moving on to Millers Falls Tool in Greenfield, Mass., as a design engineer in 1974. In 1979 he took the position of engineering manager at Superwinch in Putnam. In 1998 he started his own consulting business as Nelson Associates and joined Bio Sensory in Putnam which he enjoyed immensely up until the summer of 2013.

He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed flying, shooting, hunting and fishing. He loved his garden and canning the fruits of his labor, especially his beans and blueberries. He also enjoyed time with his grandchildren, giving them rides on the tractor and swimming in the pool.   

He leaves his wife Antoinette “Toni” Nelson of 48 years; his children, Teresa (Nelson) Rheaume (Kevin) of Kennebunk, Maine, and Robert “Rob” Jr. (Lori) of Milford, N.H.; his grandchildren, Monica, Madeline and Anthony Rheaume; his sister, Wanda (Nelson) Wright of Willimantic. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Ellen Rayhall and his grandson, Louis Nelson Rheaume. 

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. March 21 in Valade Funeral Home, N. Grosvenordale.  A gathering will begin in the funeral home at 10 a.m. March 22, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 in St. Joseph Church, N. Lydia M. Cutter

N. GROSVENORDALE —  Lydia M. Cutter, 97, of Riverside Dr., died March 15, 2014, in her home.  She was the wife of the late Raymond Cutter who died in 1996.  Born in 1917 in Thompson, she was the daughter of the late Bartolomeo and Maria (Trama) Lippiello.

Mrs. Cutter worked as a spinner at Cluett Peabody and then as a furniture finisher at Risom Manufacturing Corp. where she retired from.

Lydia enjoyed going to the casino, gardening, and cooking; especially making cookies, candies, and ravioli.

She leaves her brothers, Victor Lippiello of Putnam and Constantino “Connie” Lippiello (Ruth) of N. Grosvenordale; sister, Matilda “Tillie” Deotte of N. Grosvenordale; and several nieces and nephews whom she considered her children; and great nieces and nephews she considered as her grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sisters, Virginia Lippiello, Carmella Czechowski, and Lisa Pope and her brother Louis Lippiello.

The Mass of Christian Burial was March 18  in St. Joseph Church, N. Grosvenordale, with burial in West Thompson Cemetery. Donations: St. Joseph Church. Valade Funeral Home, 23 Main St., N. Grosvenordale.

 

MaryJane LaRose

DANIELSON — Mary Jane (Blevins) LaRose died March 8, She was born Nov. 30, 1974, the daughter of Olive Chenail Blevins and the late Michael J. Blevins.

Mary’s grade school teachers remember her as chatty, headstrong, and impulsive - the girl who ran with scissors. In High School, she was the percussion section leader of the Killingly Big Red Marching Band. She earned certificates in medical transcription and coding from Quinebaug Valley Community College. Mary was last employed at BST Systems in Plainfield. She was a vulnerable combination of a giving spirit, a soft heart and an overly trusting nature which often made Mary her own worst enemy in her quest to find a true friend. She was a fan of stock car racing, billiards, the New England Patriots and Pink Floyd.

She leaves her daughter, Nicole LaRose; her mother; her brother James Blevins; her former husband Ernie LaRose and his daughters Andrea and Kathryn; her uncle Douglas Blevins; her aunts, Sheila Butters, Kathleen Bishop and Martine Kublbeck.

Nellie Piotroski

BROOKLYN — Nellie Mary (Duszlak) Piotroski, aka “Mrs. Walmart”, 94, of Brooklyn, died, March 9, 2014, at Day Kimball Hospital, Putnam. 

She was born Jan. 6, 1920, in N. Grosvenordale, daughter of the late Stanley and Anna (Twardzik) Duszlak. She was married on Sept. 9, 1946, to Joseph Piotroski. He died in 2004.

 Nellie worked in the former Cluett Peabody Mill and Wauregan Mills. She also worked at Eatmore Restaurant, the Hartford Times, Fisher’s Big Wheel and at the Putnam Walmart as a People Greeter. She liked to tell jokes.

She leaves her daughters Linda Piotroski of Smyrna, Ga., and Eileen Piotroski of Woodstock. She was predeceased by her siblings Helen, Catherine, John, Joseph, Edward, Stasia and Stella.

William Remington

DANIELSON — William L. Remington, 71, of Danielson, died March 10, 2014, at Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam. He was born Jan. 24, 1943, in Sterling. He married the love of his life Barbara Carpenter in 1975.

William loved fishing, hunting and his cat. He enjoy going to flea markets and collection coins. He was a very social person and never missed an opening day of fishing off the bridge in Sterling. In his earlier years he worked as an inspector at Pervel Industries and later in life he worked at Big Y in Danielson.

He leaves his son Jason Remington of Ballouville; five grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Barbara Remington and his mother Dorothy Remington. 

The Funeral was March 17 at Gagnon and Costello Funeral Home, 33 Reynolds St., Danielson, with burial in the spring in Riverside Cemetery, Sterling.
