When Dayshon “Scoochie” Smith first arrived on the Putnam Science Academy campus in the fall of 2011 Head Coach Tom Espinosa and his staff knew that had something special. That young 17 year old from the Bronx, NY is now the first Putnam Science player to sign a NBA contract as last week he signed with the Boston Celtics.
Espinosa said, “We are extremely excited for Scoochie and his family, this is the first step in what I believe will be a long professional basketball career.” The 6-foot, 1-inch point guard would lead the Mustangs to new heights in his two years.
When Smith left Putnam he was the all-time leading scorer with 1010 points, but now currently is sitting in second as recent graduate Hamidou Diallo passed Smith. While Smith has been passed in career points he still holds current records as he is the all-time leader in assists with 345 and steals with 205. He also holds the single season record of steals with 103. While Smith was individually successful he led the team to unprecedented success as they went 42-17 over his two seasons.
Upon leaving Putnam as the most decorated player to come through the program, he accepted a full scholarship to play for Archie Miller at University of Dayton. Smith would have a successful college career as he helped the Flyers program to become a force in the Atlantic 10. He appeared in the NCAA tournament all fours years at Dayton. Smith was a key piece throughout his career as a 3 year starter, 2 year captain and 1,000 point scorer. Smith and his fellow seniors hold the mark for most program wins over a four year span with 102.
Smith will now play with the Celtics summer team looking to showcase his skills and sign a guaranteed contract. Smith and the Celtics will head out to the Utah summer league where they opened play on July 3 against the Philadelphia 76ers.
