WOODSTOCK ---  Meryl Emelynn Wolfe told fellow Woodstock Academy graduates June 15, 2014,  that learning leads to a successful life and urged her classmates to pursue their passion of learning.

Wolfe read her Kathryn Robertson Essay Award essay, "A New Curriculum" which described the nature of learning and education, likening learning to building a fire, quoting W.B. Yeats.

Fire needs three things, she said. The first is fuel. She said standard subjects, the core classes, are the fuel for a learning fire.. Kindling includes liberal arts classes, the ones she said students should ask not will I ever use this, but HOW can I use this. Next is oxygen, where school systems must recognize going beyond the norm is just as important. "We must go beyond standardization," she said. You can't fit a round peg in a square hole, no matter how much pounding you do.

The third element is the spark, she said. Students find that one special area of study and becomes the inspiration for learning. For her the Mandarin class became her passion, she said, the "reason I learn." 

She urged her classmates to follow what they love but keep an open mind. Move forward and find their passion. "Strike the match. Light the fire."

The winners of the Yale Honor Cups were Alexander Tedeschi and Tatjana Noel Tschirpke. Valedictorian Tedeschi and Salutatorian Kathryn Ann Archambault each received General Assembly Official Citations from the state of Connecticut. The winners of the Donald and Hope Williams Scholarships for Outstanding Academic Achievement were Tedeschi, Archambault, Tschirpke and Hannah Guilani.

As is tradition, the graduates exchanged a small gift for their diplomas. This year each gave Headmaster Christopher Sandford a puzzle piece. Graduates said when the puzzle is built, it is a group photo of the Class of 2014.
