PUTNAM — On March 16 and 17, the Fourteenth Annual Putnam Lions Volleyball Challenge was held at the Pomfret School Field House. 154 volleyball players representing 21 teams participated in the two day event.
This annual event raised over $15,000 for the Putnam Lions Charity account, which will distribute over $30,000 to local and Lion related causes this year, including scholarships for Putnam students.
On Saturday, the A and B divisions played seven hours of volleyball. The A division winning team, sponsored by King Cadillac GMC in Putnam, was captained by Danielle Rivard from Bristol. They defeated the YAMS team, captained by Steve Iwanski from Dudley.
Winning in the B division, was Pain Train, captained by Kevin Leahy of Chepachet. Lost Cause placed second. The captain of this team was Jen Devillez of Canterbury. This was a close contest as the final score was 26-24.
On Sunday, 12 teams participated in the Corporate Division to win the traveling trophy. In the final, the team of Putnam High School Swat team captained, by Lion Deb Pratt, defeated the Longmeadow Automotive team captained by William Anderson with a final score of 18-14. Other teams participating were Kenyon Industries, Gerardi Insurance (with two teams), Putnam Bank, Bank of America, Citizens National Bank, National Chromium, Frito Lay, Nextgen Security and Brookwood Laminating.
Lion Deb Pratt brought in the most pledges for this event with $600 in pledges, earning her $150 in gift cards to the J D Coopers Restaurant in Putnam. There were two other players that brought in over $300 in pledges: Carol Turner, who earned $100 in gift cards to J. D. Cooper’s, and Jen Devillez, who earned $100 in gift cards to 85 Main Restaurant. Players that brought in pledges earned gift cards to J.D. Coopers, 85 Main, Jalisco Mexican Restaurant, Gold Eagle Restaurant or Bill’s Bread & Breakfast.
All players enjoyed free food, drinks and a T-Shirt listing all of the Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze Sponsors. The largest sponsor, KARS of Putnam, was featured on the front of the shirt. The referees for this event were from the Putnam High School Women’s Volleyball team.
