Little League
off and
running
Putnam Little League celebrated the opening of its 59th season April 13. The players paraded from the Putnam Elementary School to Murphy Park led by Mayor Richard Place.
Mayor Place also addressed the capacity crowd of players, parents, grandparents and fans. He recalled his days in the Little League and spoke of the importance of athletics in the community. He also thanked the small group of volunteers that keep the league operating each year.
The crowd was also treated to the raising of a championship banner. The 2012 Junior League boys’ team won the District 11 title and moved onto last summer’s State tournament.
Putnam fire marshal and assistant fire chief Norm Perron threw out the ceremonial first pitch to officially get the season underway. He threw a perfect strike to a very excited Little Leaguer. The National Anthem was performed by Melissa Dakai. The game of the day was between the Nationals and the Red Sox. It ended in a tie, 6-6, with the Nationals scoring the tying run on their last at bat.
