HARTFORD — State Senate President Donald E. Williams (D-Brooklyn) recently announced that the State’s Bond Commission approved funding for renovations to the Day Kimball Hospital (DKH) emergency department. DKH had reported back in January that the emergency department project was in jeopardy of being delayed.
“Few things have more importance to a region than a local, state of the art community hospital emergency department,” said Williams. “That’s why I strongly supported and worked to secure the critical funding for the completion of Day Kimball Hospital’s emergency department project. I want to thank Governor Malloy for his strong support of this vital community asset.”
There are two important benefits that will result from the rebuilding of the emergency department: increased space and modernization, which features the critical component of 24 all-private treatment rooms that includes dedicated rooms specially designed for behavioral health patients, and one double-sized trauma room.
“My administration has increased support for our state’s hospitals by 25 percent each year for the past two years,” said Governor Dannel P. Malloy.
“Through the efforts of state Senate President Donald Williams, DKH will receive a $3.5 million state grant that will enable us to make infrastructure improvements necessary to support our much-needed hospital emergency department renovation project,” said Robert E. Smanik, FACHE, DKH president and CEO. “We are very appreciative of the Senator’s support of and interest in this critical effort, as the expansion and upgrading of our emergency department is an important part of an overall, systemic vision to continue to meet the healthcare needs of the people of northeast Connecticut.”
“The emergency department renovation effort – which also is being generously supported by local residents and businesses – is part of our strategic plan to continue to offer high-quality, integrated healthcare,” he added.
“Day Kimball Hospital is a valuable resource for northeast Connecticut and these infrastructure improvements will maintain the facilities reliability,” said State Representative Danny Rovero (D-Killingly). Without Day Kimball, it’s as much as a 40 to 45 minutes trip to get to the next hospital”.
