PUTNAM — To continue the legacy of the Burdick family’s contributions to Day Kimball Hospital’s birthing center Marilyn Burdick of Hampton presented her handmade quilt, “Sunbonnet Sue,” to new mom Courtney Brown and her newborn Callie Nicole, both of Putnam July 26.
She was the girl born closest to the July 24 birthday of Burdick’s late daughter, Melinda.  Each year Burdick stitches a new quilt to give to the firstborn girl to mark her birthday. Melinda unexpectedly died at Boston Children’s Hospital just shy of her second birthday.
In 2006, the Burdick family pledged $500,000 to support the renovation and expansion of Day Kimball’s maternal child health wing. It is now called the Burdick Family Birthing Center and provides a special side entrance directly into the Center to more quickly admit women for childbirth. Additionally, Day Kimball has been able to enhance the technology available to new mothers and their babies because of the Burdick’s support.
