Gloomy

The iffy weekend weather, which featured a fair amount of much needed rain, produced gloomy skies for local football teams also as only Pomfret School produced a victory on the gridiron. The four local high schools, Quinebaug Pride, Plainfield, Killingly and Woodstock Academy, went down to defeat, while Hyde-Woodstock won by forfeit.
Pomfret School jumped on the coattails of quarterback Ben Rumrill and rolled to its second win of the season romping over Sr. Thomas More on the road 47-29. The Saturday afternoon scoring outburst was more points in one game than the Griffins of Coach Henry Large had totaled in its first two games. Pomfret is now 2-1.
Also on Saturday afternoon, the Quinebaug Pride travelled to Hartford for a contest against powerful Capital Prep/Classical/Achievement First in a game played at legendary Dillon Stadium. The ride home was a long one for the Coach Joe Asermelly’s troops as they were taken to school by the Hartford contingent 43-10. Prep, which raised its record to 4-0 with the win is ranked 5th in the Capitol Region. The Pride is now 2-2.
Friday evening under the lights proved dismal for Woodstock Academy as they travelled down Route 395 to Griswold, where Coach Glenn Labossiere’s Wolverines dismantled the Centaurs 41-8. The Acads are now 0-4 on the season.
In Plainfield, the Panthers with upset on their minds were dropped by Montville 48-20. In the game for the first half, down 21-14, Plainfield was unable to produce in the second half without the services of quarterback Steve Jankowski. He was taken to Backus Hospital Emergency Room as a precautionary measure after having problems breathing during intermission. The loss dropped the Panthers to 1-3.
The most disappointing loss of the weekend was suffered by Killingly, which was defeated by a determined Bacon Academy team 21-14. This was a victory that Killingly was counting on but with injuries to key players, the Redmen were unable to produce the necessary fire power for a victory. Bacon won the contest on a late score on a five-yard Nate Kozlowski to Ryan Duclos touchdown pass. Killingly is 2-2 on the year after winning its first two games.
Hyde-Woodstock accepted a forfeit victory when visiting Tilton Academy was unable to field enough players to put a team on the field.

Quinebaug Pride’s Tylor Genest maintained his scoring lead among area players with a touchdown on Saturday, giving him 56 points on the season…Plainfield quarterback Steve Jankowski was lost for the second half against Montville when he experienced breathing difficulty. He was taken to Backus Hospital for a possible rib or lung injury…It appears Killingly’s top running threat Tyler Stucke hasn’t completely healed from his ankle sprain. Against Bacon he carried the ball eight times for a total of six yards…Conner Pion booted a fourth quarter field goal of 23-yards in the Pride’s loss in Hartford…In addition to losing Jankowski, Plainfield also lost the services of running back Cody Alday who went off the field with a foot injury at the end of the first quarter against Montville…Griswold defense limited Woodstock to only 33 yards rushing and 31 yards in the air in pummeling the Acads 41-8…Killingly unveiled a new running threat against Bacon when the Redmen’s Michael Elsey ran for 150 yards on 22 carries. He also had an 87-yard punt return for a touchdown…Pomfret’s Joe Kelley ran for three touchdowns and amassed 141 yards on only eight carries…Pomfret quarterback Ben Rumrill has not been intercepted in the Griffins first three games…Plainfield’s Jordan Federer had a nice night against Montville, running for 123 yards on 13 carries..This week’s schedule includes North Providence at Plainfield; and Cheney Tech at Quinebaug Pride; both games are Friday, 6:30 p.m. starts…On Saturday, Killingly is at Woodstock for a 3 p.m. contest and Hyde-Woodstock travels to Hebron Academy.
