Local teams took a turn for the better this week as the schoolboy football season teeters at the midway point of the season. Four local entries put up solid offensive performances in posting victories, while two teams, Woodstock Academy and Pomfret School, struggle to find the endzone.
Killingly received the medicine it needed, getting back on the winning track following two consecutive losses, with a big offensive performance. The Redmen rumbled into Woodstock for an encounter with the Centaurs and drove out with a 40-0 shutout victory.
Michael Elsey, who’s emerged with the injury to Tyler Stucke, was the catalyst for coach Chad Neal’s Redmen rushing for 233 yards on 21 carries including touchdown runs of 18, 69 and 10 yards. The victory moved Killingly to 3-2 on the season, while Woodstock remains in search of its first win at 0-5.
Quinebaug Pride also got back into the win column as it easily disposed of visiting Cheney Tech at the St. Marie-Greenhalgh Sports Complex 34-12. The Pride’s one-two punch of Raif Santerre (12-113) and John Sanderson (18-148) combined for 261 yards on the ground and three touchdowns. Quinebaug Pride is now 3-2 overall and in the CSC.
Plainfield playing out-of-conference and out-of-state opponent North Providence walked away with a convincing 50-26 victory on its home turf. With quarterback Steve Jankowski back under center the Panthers offense appeared more confident and firing on all cylinders. Jankowski rushed for 95 yards and was 8-9 in the passing department for 58 yards. The Panthers of coach Pat Smith are 2-3.
Hyde-Woodstock, trekking to the woods of Maine for an encounter with Hebron Academy rode a solid defensive effort to an 18-7 win. A Dexter Thompson 92-yard kickoff return late in the first half was the impetus for Coach Sean Saucier’s 3-1 Wolfpack.
Inconsistent Pomfret School hosted Suffield Academy in a Saturday afternoon encounter. The Griffins were overly gracious hosts, falling in defeat 48-7. Coach Henry large’s team is now 2-2.

Killingly’s premier running back Tyler Stucke remains hobbled with an ankle injury. He carried the ball only once in the win over Woodstock… Steve Jankowski and Cody Alday returned to action for Plainfield, however the Panthers lost linebacker Tim Lim to an apparent knee injury against North Providence…Quinebaug Pride quarterback Tylor Genest continues to find paydirt as he posted a 2nd period touchdown against Cheney Tech…Plainfield scored 21 unanswered points in the second half in beating North Providence…Not to be outdone, Quinebaug Pride had a 27 unanswered points run against Cheney Tech…Killingly scored three touchdowns in a three-minute span just prior to the half in its 40-0 win over Woodstock…The Pride’s Tylor Genest has 62 points on the season and his teammate Raif Santerre is approaching the half-century mark in rushing with 491 yards on the ground…Plainfield’s Jankowski has 592 yards passing on the season…Killingly’s Travis Zurowski is the area’s receiving leader with 254 yards…This week’s schedule includes Ledyard at Plainfield and New London at Killingly. Both games are Friday, 6:30 p.m. starts under the arcs…On Saturday, Stonington is at Woodstock (1:30 p.m.); Holderness visits Hyde-Woodstock (3 p.m.); Pomfret School is at Canterbury School (3 p.m.); and Quinebaug Pride travels to Whitney Tech (TBA).
