PUTNAM — Thanksgiving is just around the corner and it’s time for the volunteers at Interfaith Human Services of Putnam to get to work putting the final details together: getting paperwork in order, calling on area youth service groups for help, lining up the canned goods and stuffing, making space for the fresh fruits and root vegetables that will be provided by friends, neighbors, the Connecticut Food Bank and local businesses as we work together to provide a holiday meal for our neighbors in need.
Volunteers will also be making sure that freezer space is available for the key element of most Thanksgiving meals – the turkey.
In 2012, with your help, Daily Bread provided more than 300 Thanksgiving meals to local families. We didn’t do it alone – community support is paramount.
The Putnam Chiropractic Center on School Street will be hosting Turkey Day to help support local families. Current, active patients who bring a turkey to the center – to be donated to Daily Bread – will receive a FREE visit! Dr. Frederick A. Barks is looking forward to beating last year’s record of 42 turkeys. Daily Bread ran out of space to store the turkeys and would once again like to thank Mainly Seafood for offering their support. Barks invites you to join him and members of the Green Valley Blackhawks football team from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 23. Canned goods and cash donations are also accepted.
Local businesses are not the only source of community support. Law enforcement also joins the effort. State, Putnam and Plainfield Police are teaming up once again this weekend to HANDCUFF Hunger. Collected nonperishable food items – and turkeys – will be shared among local food pantries in Canterbury, Chaplin, Danielson, Moosup, Pomfret, Putnam, and Thompson.
This annual event is extremely successful – in 2011 the Putnam Police Department collected 150 turkeys. Last year they collected 250 turkeys.
Collection points include Price Chopper and Stop & Shop in Putnam, Aldi’s and Stop & Shop in Dayville and Better ValU stores in Canterbury and Plainfield. Officers will be on hand from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 23 and 24.
