Girls’ Roundup
Putnam &
Plainfield open season
with victories
By Ron P. Coderre
The Putnam High School girls’ basketball program under new head coach Mandi Hogan and the Plainfield Lady Panthers opened the 2013-2014-season with wins.  The Lady Clippers recorded their second win with a victory over Wilcox Tech, while Plainfield continued its winning ways with a big win over Waterford.
Life wasn’t as good for Killingly, Ellis Tech and Woodstock Academy as the trio has yet to put a victory in the W column.  The Redgals, Lady Eagles and Centaurs each dropped two games in last week’s action.
Putnam jumped out to an early 12-4 first period lead and never looked back in beating the visiting Wilcox Tech team 49-35.  Cynthia Briere with 12 points and 15 boards was the main cog in the Clippers second victory of the young season.  Lindsay Dayshaw added 12 points and Makenzi Kaylor 10 for Putnam as it prepares for the Clipper Classic on December 27.
Plainfield raised its record to 2-0 with a big 66-53 home win over Waterford.  The “black and orange” were appropriately led by the Lorange sisters Adrienne and Madeline, who combined for 35 of Plainfield’s 66 markers.  Adrienne Lorange posted 21, while Madeline chipped in 14 and Julia Jordan posted 13.
The Tourtellotte Lady Tigers continue to be perfect as they upped their record to 3-0 with a 51-41 victory over Griswold in the only game they played this week.  Allie Alblondi remained hot, leading coach Carla Faucher’s charges with 16 points.  Jess Dodd added 10 points for Tourtellotte, which is off to its best start in many years.
Woodstock under new head coach Willie Bousquet is struggling to put points on the board and consequently has been unable to pick up its first win of the season.  The Centaurs dropped to 0-4 as they lost to a pair of powerful foes Norwich Free Academy 78-28 and Ledyard 46-29.  Liz Rondeau with 11 against the Wildcats and seven against the Colonels was the top gun for the Acads.
Killingly like Woodstock is 0-4 as it was beaten by Windham 49-38 and Montville 70-36.  Meaghan Bianchi with nine in the Montville game and 18 against the Whippets is the lone bright spot for coach Mark Lowell.
Ellis Tech lost both games in its tournament and went to 0-4 on what could be a very long season for the Lady Eagles.  In the tourney opener they lost 49-7 to Windham Tech and were beaten 56-14 in the consolation contest.
Pomfret Ladies on a Tear
The Pomfret Lady Griffins received some strong team efforts as they went on a tear picking up four victories in raising their record to 5-1 on the young season.  In the process they captured the New England Classic, a tournament hosted in Pomfret.
Alyzae Davis was on fire in the New England Classic leading Pomfret to a pair of wins.  Davis posted a game-high 26 points to lead the way over Berkshire Academy 53-46 in the finals of the tourney.  She had seven field goals and 11 free throws to cap a great week.  Steady Juliette Lawless chipped in 13 markers in the win.  In a contest played the same day, Pomfret opened with a 59-46 victory over Deerfield Academy.  Once again it was Davis paving the way to the win with 23 points.  She received offensive support from Mary Redmond who had 18 points and Lawless who once again posted 13 points in the scorebook.
Leading up to the Classic, the Lady Griffins prepped with a 57-30 win over Miss Porter School and a tight 46-41 victory against Choate.  Lawless with 20 points and Redmond with 18 paced the win over Miss Porter.  The scoring in the win over Choate was distributed among the “Big Three’ with Lawless pouring in 17, Redmond 15 and Davis 10.
The up-and-down Hyde-Woodstock Ladies lost a close contest to Bancroft School 25-23, dropping their record to 2-3.  Janicha Diaz with 13 points was the only member of the Wolfpack in double figures.
