PUTNAM — Construction of the Chase Road Bridge over the Five Mile River in East Putnam will begin this week, according to DPW Director Jerry Beausoleil.
The bridge is on the portion of Chase Road that goes to the Connecticut National Golf Course between East Putnam Road and the Killingly town line.
Beausoleil said the removal and replacement of the bridge will create one-lane alternating traffic near the construction.
Traffic lights will be installed to control the alternating traffic.
Construction will be on going until December.
Eighty percent of the cost of the project cost of $1.4 million will be paid from the Federal Local Bridge Program with the remainder paid with funding previously appropriated by the Town.  Mattern Construction of Baltic, is the General Contractor.
WMC Consulting Engineers from Newington  is the town’s engineering firm and will be inspecting the construction.
He said the town is also working on the replacement of the Recreation Park Road Bridge over the Little River and the rehabilitation of the Woodstock Avenue Bridge over the Little River. WMC Consulting Engineers is designing both projects.
Questions concerning these projects can be forwarded to Beausoleil at Town Hall at 126 Church St., Putnam or by calling 860 963-6813.
