GROTON — Charter Oak Federal Credit Union awarded $14,000 in scholarships to seven local students at its Annual Meeting April 24.
Five students were awarded with a Community Scholarship. Recipients were Jennifer Jules of Taftville, a Norwich Free Academy student; Robert Diaz of New London, a student at Eastern Connecticut State University; Bridget Holte of Sprague, a student at the Academy of the Holy Family; Lori Donovan of Gales Ferry, a Ledyard High School student; and Kasey Russell of Groton, a student at Robert E. Fitch Senior High School.
Two additional scholarships were awarded in memory of two longtime employees, LuAnn Dugas and Louise Jackson. The LuAnn Dugas Memorial Scholarship was presented by Tom Dugas, husband of the late LuAnn Dugas, to Devonta Robinson of Groton. Devonta is a student at the Science and Technology Magnet School.
The Louise Jackson Community Outreach Scholarship was presented to Emma Guillot of Dayville, who attends Killingly High School. The Community Outreach Scholarship is funded entirely by Charter Oak employees, who raise money by paying a small fee each week to participate in the credit union’s casual-dress campaign.
Charter Oak awards seven $2,000 scholarships on an annual basis as part of its Community Giving Program, which has awarded more than $850,000 since its inception in 2009. Scholarship applications will become available again in January 2015.
