As part of the Gilman & Valade Funeral Homes 100th year anniversary celebration an essay contest was held in conjunction with the Valade Funeral Home open house and President Abraham Lincoln display.
The contest was open to all students from Putnam, Killingly, Plainfield, and Thompson in grades six through 12.
Robert R. Fournier Jr., owner and funeral director of Gilman & Valade Funeral Homes & Crematory, and William M. Juzwic, event coordinator and funeral director, presented the awards.
The first three essay winners were from Thompson Middle School: 6th grade, Dakota Hicks; 7th grade, Connor Bosiak; 8th grade, Haylie Baillargeon. The 10th grade essay winner was from Marianapolis Prep School, Brianna Rhett and the 11th grade essay winner from Tourtellotte Memorial High School was Channing Boss.
“We are both honored and humbled at the outpouring of people that attended the Abraham Lincoln display event and the amount of student participation for the essay contest. Choosing the winners was not an easy task,” Juzwic said.
