John Philip O’Hara,
Korean war vet
WOODSTOCK — John Philip “Phil” O’Hara, 87, died Oct. 18, 2020, in Brooklyn with his children at his side. Born May 17, 1933, in Worcester, he was a graduate of the New Hampton School.
He earned his bachelor’s at Brown University in 1957 after spending two years serving in the U.S. Army in Korea. Mr. O’Hara and his wife of 25 years, Patricia, recently moved from Providence to the Quiet Corner of northeastern Connecticut. Ruth E. Barbeau
DAYVILLE — Ruth E. (McKenna) Barbeau, 88, of Putnam Rd., died Oct. 26, 2020, at home.
She was the wife of the late Roger F. Barbeau. Born in 1932 in Putnam, she was the daughter of the late Leo and Mary (Kingberger) McKenna, DDS.
Mrs. Barbeau worked as a radiologist at Day Kimball Hospital as well as the bookkeeper for her husband’s business, Roger Barbeau Plumbing and Heating. Ruth enjoyed visiting the casinos and going to the beach with her family and friends.
She leaves three sons, James Barbeau of Dayville (with whom Ruth made her home), Peter Barbeau (Wanda) of Killingly, and Edward Barbeau (Michelle) of Brooklyn; a sister, Lee Ulitsch of Newington; and three grandchildren, Michael, Franklin, and Benjamin. She was predeceased by her two sisters, the late Mary Ellen Duff and Ann Johnson. The Funeral is private. Gilman Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Church St., Putnam.
Sr. Marian St.Marie
PUTNAM — Sr. Marian St.Marie, DHS, 81, a member of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit, died unexpectedly Oct. 19, 2020 in Putnam. Born Marian Therese St.Marie on Oct. 11, 1939, in Hartford, she was the daughter of Leonide and Gertrude Marion St.Marie. She made her religious profession on July 2, 1959, at the Holy Spirit Provincial House in Putnam. She was then known as Sr. Therese Marian. She earned her bachelor’s in education and theology from Diocesan Sisters College and her master’s in history and political science from St. Joseph University in W. Hartford. She began her teaching career in elementary schools in CT, VT and MA, then taught social studies and history at Putnam Catholic Academy in Putnam, South Catholic High School in Hartford, and then at Mercy High School in Middletown. In her work she aimed to make her students aware of the positive aspects of other cultures and of the injustices that have been perpetuated throughout history into the present day.
She left teaching after 52 years when called to be a Provincial Councilor for the US Province of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit in 2014. In addition, she was the advisor for the East Coast Associates. Her mandate as Councilor ended June 30 and she was looking forward to where the Spirit would lead her at this time.
She leaves the Daughters of the Holy Spirit spiritual family – her Sisters in community, the Consecrated Seculars and the Associates; her brother Gerald St.Marie (Elaine); a nephew Geoffrey St.Marie; a niece Aimee Viniconis; a grand-niece and grand-nephew.
