PUTNAM — The American Legion Post #13, in conjunction with the town of Putnam, reworked the process for the veteran banners around town.
Banners will now stay up for two years then be retired and passed along to the veteran. There are more than 1,000 veterans from the town of Putnam and the goal is to ensure banners go up for as many as possible. Brian Maynard, immediate past commander of the legion, said honoring that many veterans “can only be done if we limit the time each banner stays up.”
The weather also has a significant impact on banners and bringing them down after two years assures they can be passed to the veteran in a presentable condition. Any banner that will be coming down can be requested by the veteran or family.
Those interested in having a banner should meet the following requirements
-Joined the service as a resident of Putnam; must still be living; be a current resident of Putnam; and be able to provide a copy of their DD-214.
Maynard said the banners are paid for by the American Legion and the Putnam Recreation Department; however, donations can be made to the American Legion Post #13 P.O. Box 123 Putnam, CT, 06260. Please note in the memo for “veteran banners.”
