POMFRET — The Pomfret School varsity field hockey team played its first game in two years against league opponent Greens Farms Academy in a first-time match-up, but came away with a 7-3 loss.
A key starter out forced Pomfret to adjust even more in every aspect of the game and GFA took advantage immediately scoring 29 seconds in. Another goal at 7:19 and a third at 2:45 put Pomfret in a bit of a hole at the end of the quarter. The Griffins stepped up their game and scored two goals in the second quarter for a 2-3 score at the half. Grace Long ’23 scored at 10:16 on a Cate Gallagher ’22 pass. At 2:50, Brooke Zahansky ’23 (Pomfret), scored on a perfect set-up pass from Carter Lockwood ’22. Suddenly down by one at the half gave the Griffins the confidence to not give up. Sure enough, at 10:54 in the third, Cate Gallagher scored on a Grace Long pass to tie it up. That caught GFA off-guard. Unfortunately, an unintentional mistake cost Pomfret a card, which lead to a penalty stroke and goal for GFA.
With Pomfret playing a player down for five minutes, GFA scored two more to jump back to a 3 goal 6-3 lead. In the 4th quarter, they scored one more for a final score of 7-3.
