CT National Guard
to break ground
on Putnam
Readiness Center
HARTFORD — The Connecticut National Guard, Governor Ned Lamont, Senator Richard Blumenthal, Representative Joe Courtney, and state officials will host a groundbreaking ceremony for a new readiness center at 11 a.m. Oct. 28 at 376 Pomfret St. (Rt. 44).
The Connecticut National Guard received $19.5 million in federal military construction funding and $6.5 million in state bonding for the construction project that was accomplished thanks to the hard work of both state and federal leadership.
The facility will be over 37,000 square feet and house the 643rd Military Police Company that is currently stationed in the outdated Westbrook Armory which was built in 1955.
Those attending will include: Governor Lamont, Senator Richard Blumenthal, Rep. Joe Courtney, Maj. Gen. Francis J. Evon, other state officials.
Tents in place, event is rain or shine.
“We greatly appreciate the efforts of our state officials and our federal delegation to get this project designed and funded,” said Maj. Gen. Francis J. Evon. “As we have seen over the past several years, the need for the National Guard to rapidly respond to weather and security events has increased dramatically, while we also continue to generate forces for deployment overseas in support of federal missions. COVID-19 highlighted that the Guard is vital to securing lifelines and infrastructure in our communities. Construction of the Putnam Readiness Center gives us a presence in northeastern Connecticut that we have not had in well over a decade. It will provide us a staging base to respond to our communities in the ‘Quiet Corner’ much faster when hours and minutes count.”
