George E. Chenail,
WWII vet
DANIELSON — George E. Chenail, 86,  of Maple Court, formerly of Old Saybrook, died Feb. 17, 2010, at home. He was born Feb. 22, 192,3 in Wauregan, the oldest of six children of George S. and Cora (Baril) Chenail, who predeceased him. He attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from Plainfield High School, Class of 1941.
George was a veteran of WWII, where he proudly served as a radio-gunner on B-24s with the Wendling Liberators Bomb Group of the 8th Army Air Corps in Wendling England. He earned an Air Medal, 5 Oak Leaf Clusters, and three Battle Stars for meritorious achievement in combat  over Europe, and attained the rank of staff sergeant.  He was employed in the Electrical Design Department  of Electric Boat for over 40 years, George retired in 1993. He served briefly as chief of West Wauregan Fire Department  and was chief of Atwood Hose Fire Department from 1956 to 1963. Formerly a very athletic man, he played first base on the Wauregan Tigers Baseball Team in the late 1940s and enjoyed skiing, tennis, and golf. He was an avid fan of the UConn Basketball and NY Yankees baseball.  During his retirement, George served as a volunteer dispatcher for the Old Saybrook Police Department and was a starter at Fenwick Golf Course. He was a former member of the Westbrook, CT BPOE and a former communicant of St. John’s Roman Catholic Church in Old Saybrook.
He leaves his daughter, Olive Blevins of Danielson; grandchildren: Jim Blevins, Mary Jane LaRose and her husband Ernie LaRose and his daughters Andrea and Kathryn, and great-grandchildren Nicole LaRose; stepchildren Tim Ladd and his wife Marie of Mattapoisett, Mass., Jeff Ladd and his wife Terri Ann of Rhode island, Ann Ladd Creviston and her husband John of Guilderland, N.Y.; six step-grandchildren; brothers Richard Chenail and Gerald Chenail of Moosup; sister Rachel Chenail Silva of San Ramon, Calif. He was predeceased by his parents, his first wife Corinne (Deloge) Chenail; son, Michael A Chenail; second wife Bernice Walker Ladd-Chenail; sisters, Olive F. Chenail and Jane Chenail Prairie.
The Mass of Christian Burial was Feb. 20, in St. James Church, Danielson, with military honors, with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Sister Eleanor
Breton, DHS
PUTNAM — Sr. Eleanor Breton, DHS, 77, a member of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit, died Feb. 20, 2010, at Holy Spirit Health Care Center where she had been in residence since 1998.
The daughter of the late Albert and Bertha (Thibeault) Breton, Sr. Eleanor was born in 1923 in Putnam.  She entered religious life in 1950 and made her religious profession on Aug. 18, 1953, at the Holy Spirit Provincial House in Putnam.  She was then known as Sr. Marie Albert de Jesus.
She received a bachelor’s degree from Diocesan Sisters’ College, Putnam and a master’s from Fairfield University, Fairfield.  She taught most of her active life.  Assignments were:  St. Anthony School, Bridgeport; Assumption School, Chicopee, Mass.; St. Cecilia, Leominster, Mass.; and St. Mary School, Putnam.  In 1985, Sr. Eleanor became a clerical assistant at All Hallows School, Moosup.  Ill health caused her to retire to the Provincial House in 1998.
She leaves one sister, Theresa Carver of Mystic; two brothers, Albert of West Willington,  and Richard of Naples Florida; nieces and nephews.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Feb. 24 at the Provincial House chapel followed by burial in St. Mary Cemetery, Putnam. Donations: Daughters of the Holy Spirit Retirement Fund, 72 Church St., Putnam, CT  06260.  Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam.

Leo Moriarty,
WWII vet
THOMPSON — Leo Moriarty, 85 of Thurber Road, died Feb. 15, 2010, in Matulaitis Nursing Home in Putnam.  He was the husband of Marie L. (Freeman) Moriarty for 64 years.  Born in 1924 in Ware, Mass., he was the son of the late Thomas and Rena (Laviolette) Moriarty.
Mr. Moriarty was an Army Air Corp WWII veteran where he served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and completed 29 missions.  He worked as a supervisor for several local shoe manufacturers.  Leo also worked as a realtor in Charlton, Mass., and as a constant care attendant at Day Kimball Hospital for 12 years before retiring at age 81.  He enjoyed woodworking and was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans of Webster.
In addition to his wife, Leo leaves two daughters, Donna Darby and Brenda Verdone, both of Thompson; six grand children Sean, Timothy, Karen, Holly, Christopher and Deanna; and one great-granddaughter Lindsay.
The Funeral was Feb. 17 in the Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam.

Paul E. Berger,
WWII vet
N. GROSVENORDALE — Paul E. Berger, 88, of Floral Avenue, died Feb. 15, 2010, in the Regency Heights Healthcare Center.  He was the husband of the late Malvina Mary (Sanbourin) Berger.  Born in 1921 in Quebec, he was the son of the late Alberic and Angelina (Tremblay) Berger.
Mr. Berger worked as a machine operator for the Putnam Hertzl Co. retiring in 1986.  He was a WWII Army veteran serving in Central Europe.  He volunteered for and was a charter member of the VFW Post #10088 in Thompson.  He was an avid Yankee fan.
He leaves two sons, Normand Berger and Donald Berger, both of N. Grosvenordale.  He was predeceased by two brothers, Gabriel Berger and Roger Berger.

Connie Doyle,

PUTNAM — Connie Doyle, 71, died Feb. 17, 2010, at home.
Connie loved to crochet and go camping. She had worked several years at Hale Manufacturing Company and at several other local companies.
She leaves behind her husband and lifelong companion; a son, Donald Doyle and his wife Tina of Putnam; daughter, Patty True of Putnam; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews; a brother and a sister. She was predeceased by a son, William Doyle.

John Gould,

WOODSTOCK — John Nathan Gould, 84, of Woodstock, died Feb. 14, 2010, at Day Kimball Hospital. He was born July 15, 1925, in Providence, son of Herman E. and Charlotte M. Gould. On May 20, 1950, he married Calla Linnea Otto, with whom he had four sons, Nathan (deceased), David, George and John Gould.
He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II as a radar operator, and later worked as an air traffic controller for the Civil Aeronautics Administration. He attended Cornell University and the New School for Social Research in New York, and graduated from Brown University. He taught labor relations at the UConn, and later worked as an organizer for the United Steelworkers of America in Providence and Pittsburgh. In 1968, he moved to Ghana with his family, as a representative for the African-American Labor Center. He worked in Africa for 25 years, living in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Egypt, and traveling to many other African countries. At his retirement he was regional director for North and East Africa for the AALC.
He leaves his wife, Calla L. Gould, of Woodstock; sons David Gould of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, George Gould of Putnam, John Gould of Shelburne Falls, Mass.; six grandchildren, Jacob, Sarah, Gabriel, Jeremy, Heather, and Ethan Gould, and four great-grandchildren, Maia and Owen Ostromecki, and Noah and Cylus Gould.

Norman LaLiberte,

WOODSTOCK — Norman Ulric LaLiberte, 94, of Woodstock,  died Feb. 19, 2010, at Orchard Valley Assisted Living in Wilbraham, Mass. He was the husband of the late Barbara (Davis) LaLiberte. They were married in 1946 and she died June 8, 1996.
He was born Dec. 21, 1915, in Spencer, Mass., son of the late Albert and Lizzie (Pion) LaLiberte. Norman was a chemist working at the American Optical Company for over 35 years, retiring in 1980. He had made his home Woodstock for over 53 years. He was a communicant of Most Holy Trinity Church in Pomfret. He enjoyed his breakfasts at the Vanilla Bean Cafe, and his beloved pet Abby.
He leaves his daughters, Judy Billings and her husband Donald of Tolland, Janet Nolen and her husband Jim of Ware, Mass., Joanne LaLiberte of Webster; grandchildren, Randy Billings and his wife Rebecca, Bryon Billings and his wife Sarah, Patrick Nolen, Michael Nolen and his wife Michelle, Andrew Nolen, Robert Nolen, Timothy Nolen, Christopher Nolen; a great-grandson, William James Nolen.

Hannah Nimmo
STURBRIDGE, Mass. --- The infant daughter of Theresa Wyngowski and Erik Nimmo died Feb. 12, 2010.
She also leaves her maternal grandparents Edward Wyngowski and Tracy Pierce; paternal grandparents John Nimmo and Gerd Lossius (Sam Pines) of N. Woodstock; maternal great-grandparents, Mary Wyngowski and Joan Pierce; paternal great-grandparents Edwin and Louis Vail; paternal great-grandmother Anna Lossius; aunts and uncles.
