Marianapolis
By Colin Griggs
The Marianapolis varsity girls’ basketball team earned another big victory in SENE action Feb. 18 when they hosted the Williams School. MPS was down 15-14, but went on a 17-0 run late in the first half to take the lead for good.
Early on in the game, it looked like the visitors had come to Marianapolis to prove they could win on the road. MPS struggled early and with 9:10 on the clock in the first half, Williams led 10-4. Sophomore Melanie Mills made a basket for the Golden Knights (16-5, 10-2) to close the gap, and then freshman Sydney Latour brought MPS to within one as Williams led 12-11.
Mills received a pass in the paint and kicked it out to the three-point line where junior Alyson Stolz drained a three-pointer to give Marianapolis a 14-12 lead. Williams responded with a three-pointer of their own to lead 15-14. It would be the last lead of the day for the away side as Latour made a basket and Mills went two for two from the line to start a 17-point run.
Freshman Becky Stolz got into the action with back-to-back baskets and with 1:09 on the clock, Marianapolis was comfortably ahead 31-15. At the half, Latour was leading all scorers with 10 points after a late three-pointer from Williams, MPS led 31-18.
Another surge from the Golden Knights early in the second half put the game away as MPS scored nine straight points to lead 49-24. On the whole, the 26-3 run put MPS in cruise control.
The Knights went 14-20 from the charity stripe, dominated the game in the paint, and gave up just 18 points in each half. Mills finished the day with a game-high 18 points, while Latour finished with 16 and A. Stolz recorded 14. The two teams met again Feb. 22 in their final game of the SENE regular season.

On Feb. 12, in what the WBCA calls the Pink Zone, the Marianapolis varsity girls’ basketball team earned a 40-38 victory in SENE action.
The Women’s Basketball Coach’s Association sponsored the week as a way to bring awareness for Cancer Research to the forefront of the basketball world. Many high schools and universities around the country sponsored the week by wearing pink, making donations and playing with Wilson’s pink ball. Feb. 12, the Marianapolis varsity girls’ basketball team began their sponsoring week with a great come-from-behind victory.
MPS (15-4, 9-2) opened the game by jumping out to an early 9-4 lead. Junior Alyson Stolz kicked off the game with a three-pointer and then recorded an assist on a long pass to senior Helaine Goudreau. Sophomore Melanie Mills scored Marianapolis’ next four points — converting a basket off Goudreau’s inbounds pass with 10:46 remaining in the first half.
Hyde converted on back-to-back three pointers to take a 10-9 lead. It would be their last lead of the half as freshman Sydney Latour went 1-2 from the free throw line and then the Knights converted a great transition basket to take the lead. Sophomore Sara Morrow had a block on the defensive end. Freshman Becky Stolz grabbed the ball and found classmate Latour for the layup and the lead.
With 5:50 on the clock, A. Stolz drained a three-pointer to put Marianapolis ahead by five. She hit another one three minutes later to complete a 14-4 run, and Knights led 23-14. Hyde responded well to finish the half down 25-20.
The second half started slowly for both teams as it took more than four minutes for the score to change. Hyde finally got on the board converting both free throws and then making a basket with 10:38 left to close within one.
Marianapolis jumped back out to a four-point lead, but Hyde tied the game at 28 with 8:55 remaining. Once again the Knights took a four-point lead. This time though, Hyde scored eight straight to take a 36-32 lead with 2:00 on the clock.
After trading baskets, the Knights found themselves down 38-34 with 1:35 on the clock. Morrow drained a three-pointer to cut Hyde’s lead to just one point. Hyde failed to convert on their next two possessions and left the door open for Marianapolis’ freshman duo.
B. Stolz attempted to inbounds the ball, but was forced to call a timeout with 20 seconds on the clock. On her second attempt, she found Latour who nailed a jumper to take a 39-38 lead. B. Stolz would make one out of two free throws with one second on the clock to seal the victory for Marianapolis.
Hyde

Hyde 27 Lincoln 67
Hyde traveled to Lincoln Feb. 17 and experienced firsthand the reason why Lincoln is number one in the league and could do some damage in the New England Tournament. Lincoln has size, speed, and experience. Hyde was outmatched and definitely outplayed, however, more disappointing were the attitude flair ups, which resulted in a starter sitting out most of the first half, and the lack of leadership. The team met with more adversity in the form of an early injury to Mari Barnett ‘11 and illness to Margaret Ann Regnery ‘10. No one said it would be easy but character gets tested in times of adversity and in the first half this team failed the test. The second half was more cohesive and certainly fewer roadblocks but Lincoln had already done its damage. Stats: Sabrina Padro ‘10, 11 points; Becca Katz ‘11, 5 points; Mari Barnett ‘11, 4 points; Katherine Hagood ‘13, 2 points; Katie Duchesneau ‘10, 2 points; and Haruka Koda ‘10 1 point.
Hyde 39  Williams 30
Hyde traveled to Williams Feb. 13 to avenge an earlier season loss. The girls were worn out after two games in as many days but they were out to prove their toughness with a scrappy defensive effort. Mari Barnett ‘11 played an incredible game against one of their top scorers — she both wore her down and frustrated her. The first half was a dead heat with both teams scoring 16 points. Sabrina Padro ‘10 once again had a great half of basketball scoring 13 of her 18 points in the second half. Katie Duchesneau ‘10 also contributed a great deal on both ends of the court. Lexi Burke ‘10 played a tough game on the inside that gave the team an edge. Hyde pulled away slightly in the second half the largest lead they enjoyed was 13. Williams played tough throughout and closed to within 9 points. Stats: Sabrina Padro ‘10 18 points; Katie Duchesneau ‘10, 10 points; Margaret Ann Regnery ‘10, 5 points; Mari Barnett ‘11,Katherine Hagood ‘13, and Lexi Burke ‘10, all had two points.
Pomfret School

Pomfret 43 Kingswood-Oxford 18
Despite the absence of senior captain Maura Hall and junior guard Z Hutchins, and the lingering sickness of three others, the girls traveled to West Hartford and defeated fellow Class B school, Kingswood-Oxford, by the score of 43-18.  The biggest error of the day might have come even before the opening tip.  Coach Brooks reminded the girls that they never shoot well in the K-O gym, and the girls listened just a little too intently. The intent was to inspire more offensive rebounds, but it turned out to be a self-fulfilling prophecy.  The girls shot a dismal 26% on the game.  If it weren’t for Samociuk leading the fast break, Keita working tirelessly inside, and Derosier and Gaudreau with their combined 8 assists, the girls might have let the poor shooting get the best of them.  Eleven first-half turnovers didn’t help either, but the girls cleaned it up a bit in the second half and clamped down defensively, holding the opponent to only 4 second half baskets.
Stats: Alyson Chase:  4 points (4-4 from the foul line,)1 rebound, 1 assist,  2 steals, 1 block; Kevalin Hutachinds:  2 points, 1 rebound; Jamie Samociuk:  12 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, 1 block; Tristyn Drake:  3 rebounds; Meg Calderado:  2 rebounds; Caroline Kozlowski:  2 rebounds; Meg Gaudreau:  3 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks; Whitney Willingham:  2 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 blocks; Kim Derosier:  5 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals; Zenab Keita:  15 points, 14 rebounds, 4 steals, 1 block.
