The Woodstock Academy softball team lost to a scrappy Killingly team May 17. Chelsea Gosselin pitched well for the Redgals and she was helped by some outstanding glove work contributed by shortstop Chelsea Arpin. The Centaurs scored first in the 3rd inning and then had opportunities in the 4th. Those opportunities went by the wayside thanks to two nice plays by Arpin, who covered third on two fielder’s choice plays at third. Centaur pitcher Taylor Malstrom was able to avoid damage until the fifth when Killingly scored all five of there runs. A walk followed by three Woodstock errors, another walk and hits by Mulvey and Arpin gave Killingly the 5-1 victory. “Killingly made the plays and got the big hits when they needed to and we didn’t. That was the difference in the game,” said Centaur head coach David Walley.
May 21, Woodstock faced one of the best teams in the State as they travelled to Waterford to take on the 17-0 Lancers. Despite playing a strong game, the Lady Centaurs took the loss 6-0. Waterford’s Kelli Connors limited the Centaurs to one hit. The defense was highlighted by an outstanding catch by freshman Danielle Faries in left field that prevented a Waterford home run. Justina Thoma and Jessica Little played well as the left side of the WA infield was tested all game long. “We played with intensity today and did a nice job in the field. I was happy with the effort if not the outcome,” added Walley.
May 22 the Centaurs hosted the East Lyme Vikings and celebrated the final home game for seniors Jessica Little and Rochelle Graveline. The Centaurs celebrated in style beating the Vikings 5-2, picking up there 5th win of the season. Woodstock trailed 0-2 when Julia Oleksy came up in the fourth with one out. Oleksy hit a deep ball into the gap for a triple, which got the Centaurs going. Samantha Boyle hit a hard ball to third , but Oleksy was unable to score. Adelis Concepcion followed and Oleksy was able to score on a passed ball before Concepcion walked. Concepcion scored on an RBI double by Vanessa Valenti and then Hannah Neill singled scoring Valenti. The next inning, Oleksy again had the big hit, doubling home Chelsea Gosselin, giving the Centaurs the 5-2 lead. Taylor Malstrom pitched her best game of the season limiting East Lyme to three hits.
After the game, Walley spoke about the seniors, “Jess has started all four years for us in several positions, she will attend Springfield College next year in a physician’s assistant program. Rochelle has been the 2nd baseman for the past three years and will attend Sacred Heart University in a physical therapy program. They are great kids that have done very well at our school, they will be missed.”
