PUTNAM — May 21 the Lady Clippers played under the lights in New London and lost 9-1.
“The Lady Clippers played a good game against New London High school. Although the outcome continues to be the same, there were more positives to take out of this game by the Lady Clippers. This was our best hitting game by far,” said head coach Stephen Smith.
“We hit the ball hard all night, it just happened to be either right at someone or New London made some great catches,” he added.
Freshman Taylor Trudeau led off the second inning by reaching on an error, then stole second and stole third. Junior Cori Sasinowski drove Trudeau in with a sacrifice. To make the game 2-1. It was a tight game going into the sixth inning. New London was leading 6-1 when sophomore Megan Heaney walked, then stole second. Sophomore Holly Desrosiers hit a bullet towards second base when New London’s second baseman made a great catch.
“I thought we were going to have a nice little rally there but great plays like that haunted us all night,” Smith said.
New London then scored three more in the seventh to put the finishing touches on a well played game. The final score was 9-1.
“Due to a few rain outs this was the only time we could get the game in, so we were the home team. We decided that a game under the lights would be fun, so we accepted,” said Smith.
The Lady Clippers’ last game of the year was May 24 against Killingly.
May 19 was senior day for the Lady Clippers softball team. In her last home game for Putnam, the lone senior Clipper was Captain Amanda Masztal who went 1 for 4 with a run scored and played a very solid third base. Also for the Lady Clippers freshman Taylor Trudeau went 3 for 3, Megan Heaney was 1 for 3 and Dawn Cerasiello went 1 for 3.
Unfortunately Putnam meet a very solid Lyman High team which won the game 17-3. “There was alot of emotion today,” said coach Smith. “Amanda has been a leader all year and will be missed.”
“The Lady Clippers played well today but Lyman was just to overpowering and was led by winning pitcher Emily Vigue. I can’t say enough about these girls,” said Smith. “Every game we work hard and give 110 percent. That is all a coach can ask for,” he added.
