The NECONN Boys’ U11 Soccer Team hosted first place Marlborough June 5 and fell by the score of 1-4.  It was a closely contest matchup from start to finish, but Marlborough pulled away in the final minutes to take home the victory.
The NECONN defense of Connor Fillmore, David Redfield and William Liscomb were busy throughout the afternoon as the Marlborough front line used their speed and skill to keep the pressure on.  It was Marlborough who scored first at the seventeen minute mark on a penalty kick.  NECONN goalie Jack Liggett made a great initial save, but the Marlboro shooter alertly recovered the ball and put the rebound into the back of the net.  NECONN would counter with a goal of their own four minutes later when Evan Cunningham outran the Marlborough defense, drew the goalie out, and confidently pushed a slow-roller toward the net.  Although the ball crossed the goal line with just enough momentum, Tucker Sheehan was there with an emphatic blast at the end just to make sure.  The first half ended with the score knotted 1-1
In the second half, Jack Liggett, Sam Paul and Max Paro shared the goaltending duties while also jumping in at the attack with Elijah Dufour, Chris Walker and Tucker Sheehan.  The different pairings produced some good scoring opportunities, but the Marlborough goaltending and defense was up to the challenge.  Marlborough was able to score a quick goal in the second half on a breakaway, but NECONN countered with good scoring bids of their own.  With time clicking off the clock, NECONN took chances to get the equalizer, but the result was two late scores by Marlborough to ice the victory.
NECONN’s record now stands at 2-2 as they head into the final weekend of play with a home game at 4:30 June 13  vs. Plainfield.
