Pomfret School
Varsity Soccer
Pomfret 7 Cushing 1
Sept. 29: Dylan O’Hara started the scoring off at the 45 second mark on a blast from 35 yds out to put Pomfret up 1-0 within the first minute. After a short let down from Pomfret, the team regrouped and went on to explode for four more goals within six minutes to go into the half up 5-0. Caroline Kozlowski had a goal assisted from Alison Horst and L’Or Iman Puymartin finished two, both off great crosses from Caroline. Morgan Lasewicz scored her first varsity goal off an assist from Izzy Regine. Second half goals came from Liv Dalton-Hoffman off a corner from Carly Scott, and from Caroline who finished on a 1 v keeper opportunity. Keeper Mackenzie Dunphy finished with 5 saves and made a valiant effort to keep her 3 game shutout streak alive with a few 1v1 chances from Cushing, but a flat and tired Pomfret midfield led to the sole Cushing goal with ten minutes remaining in the game. Backs Alyson Chase, Val DiLella, Dylan O’Hara, Dejda Collins & Alida Bernhart remained poised and moved the ball very well around the back all afternoon to keep the Cushing forwards at bay. Pomfret moves to 4-0 on the season.
Pomfret 3 Deerfield 3
Oct. 2: It took the girls’ varsity soccer team exactly 23 minutes before they showed up to play after a two-hour bus trip to Deerfield. Unfortunately, in that time Deerfield put two in the net and the Griffins found themselves down for the first time all season. The defenders were lackluster and did not adjust to Deerfield’s speed up top, and our forwards squandered a few key chances early in the game. Luckily, Pomfret regrouped and worked its way back into the game. Within 30 seconds of Deerfield’s second goal, Caroline Kozlowski responded and nailed a shot upper 90 from 30 yards out. It was quite a crack, and it lifted Pomfret’s spirits going into the half down by one. The second half saw a better Pomfret side with more defensive pressure and better runs from the forwards. The tide shifted and Pomfret dictated the play for the majority of the half. Andi Nicholson created Pomfret’s second goal midway through the second half when she beat her defender and got in on the keeper only to be brought down from behind and awarded a penalty kick. Jamie Samociuk stepped up and calmly put the ball in the back of the net for the equalizer. Pomfret continued to push, earning several corners and free kicks, but could not find the winning goal. Despite a better half, Pomfret was not efficient in the final third and had little chemistry today. Alida Bernhart and Alyson Chase kept us in the game in the back, as did keeper Mackenzie Dunphy who finished with nine saves.
Marianapolis
Varsity Soccer
Sept. 30: Suffield Academy was nearly given more than they could handle by our Lady Golden Knights today. Last year’s New England runners-up traveled to Thompson to face a different and disciplined Marianapolis squad. Strong serving, solid defense and excellent offensive transition saw the Knights jump out to a 2-0 lead (26-24, 25-23). The third set started strong as well with Marianapolis taking the early lead. However, it was not to be. Key injuries took two starters out of the lineup and in spite of their hard work and determination the Knights couldn’t close out the match, losing the final 3 sets (19-25, 19-25, 13-15).
Hyde
Varsity Soccer
Hyde 1 Williams School 3
Oct. 2: Though the weather made for the perfect fall day, the Hyde Girls Varsity Soccer Team could not catch a break. Even controlling the play and outshooting the opponent, the WolfPack came up short of its potential. The first half of play saw an outstanding performance from the Hyde players. They moved the ball well through the midfield and stretched offensively to repeatedly challenge the Williams defense. Rianna Arellano ’12 and Bryn Nolan ’12 worked together extremely well with their passing combinations, and yet could not find the back of the net. Hyde also saw ample play generated from the hard work of Mari Barnett ’11, who was consistently supported by Arellano and Nolan. Unfortunately, Williams somehow found the goal first. With 8:45 left in the first half, a Williams player received a through pass that broke her even with the strong Hyde defense and she tapped the ball past the Hyde keeper. Refusing to end the half with a deficit, the Hyde players elevated their level of play. Arellano worked the ball through the midfield to Barnett, who fed Joy Yang ’13 at the top of the box. Yang was able to move the ball past the defender to Hope Eldridge ’11, who finessed the ball into the back of the net with 3:07 left in the half. This gave Hyde an overdue goal and the momentum going into the second half of play.
That momentum, however, would cease at half time, as the WolfPack never fully found its stride in the second half of play. Still outshooting and out possessing the opponent, the team did not have the same spark or tenacity that was clear in the first forty minutes of play. In a five minute span shortly after half time, Williams was able to find the back of the net twice. The WolfPack did not respond well to the deficit and seemed to slow the level of play as the remaining 27 minutes of play continued. Still able to hold a 12-8 shot margin and possess the ball for most of the game, Hyde could not connect in front of the net, resulting in a disappointing finish for the team.
Hyde benefitted greatly from the play of Barnett and Arellano in the midfield, as well as the much improved defensive unit of Becca Katz ’12, Camryn Bindra ’13, and Caitlyn Colley ’11.
