NORWICH — Five members of the Putnam Bank team got into the swing of things at the recent 7th Annual Backus Hospital Mini Golf Tournament.
The event, which was sponsored by the William J. Backus Hospital Auxiliary, raised $10,000 to support the hospital’s annual fund and its scholarship program, which benefits local residents who are pursuing health-related careers.
More than 70 golfers were joined by Putnam Bank’s Senior Vice President and Branch Administrator Lynn Brodeur, Griswold branch manager Brenda Engel, Plainfield branch manager Carrie Szymanski, Training Officer Joyce McOsker, and Assistant Vice President and Human Resources Officer Barbara Elliott.
“Being a community bank means being a true part of the community,” said Brodeur. “It is important to us to give back and to show support for others working to improve our area’s quality of life. And it was a lot fun!”
Fun as it was, funds raised at the tournament have a serious impact on the hospital and its work in the community. Like Putnam Bank, Backus Hospital has been in the eastern Connecticut community for more than 100 years.
The 213-bed, not-for-profit, acute care community hospital is the primary source of health services for nearly a quarter-million people.
Backus is the only trauma center east of the Connecticut River, and it is the only regional facility that has a hangar for LIFE STAR, Hartford Hospital’s air medical transport helicopter.
“Backus really appreciates community support of all its fund-raising programs, particularly the Auxiliary,” said Keith Fontaine, Backus’s vice president and chief communications officer. “They are always out there raising money and raising awareness for the hospital.”
