Dec. 12: The girls struggled to connect from the outside but seemed to find their groove from the perimeter. Starters Jamie Samociuk, Czarina Hutchins, Meg Gaudreau and Alyson Chase all connected from behind the 3-point line while Whitney Willingham worked the inside for rebounds and second chance opportunities. Additionally, the ball movement and off-ball movement was strong especially considering that it was the first zone defense the girls have faced this season, both in practice and games.
L’or Iman Puymartin, making her Pomfret debut, and Meg Calderado both contributed valuable minutes and impressed the coaches with their court vision, finishing with two assists each, and Anyolina Montilla finished as leading rebounder for the second time in two games. Joddie Iyalekhue showed considerable growth from last year as she moved with confidence on both the offensive and defensive end, while Liv Dalton-Hoffman, also making her Pomfret debut, showed poise as she took on the point guard role for a few possessions. Kevalin Hutachinda, Carly Scott, and Caroline Kozlowski played with a lot of hustle, finishing with 2 steals, 2 offensive rebounds and 1 forced turnover, respectively.

Varsity Ice Hockey
Pomfret 5 Williston 1
Dec. 12: The girls earned a hard fought victory over one of the top-ranked teams in Division 1. The goal of the first period was to get on the board early and Pomfret did just that one minute into the game. Senior Cassie Catlow fired a goal top-shelf to put the Griffins up 1-0. Pomfret had a couple more chances later in the period, but could not capitalize. Senior goaltender Jaimie Leonoff stifled any first period attempts by the Williston Wildcats and we headed into the locker room up by one.
The second period was dominated by the Wildcats who outshot the Griffins 10-3. Leonoff stood on her head, controlling rebounds and making tremendous saves. The Wildcats finally snuck one by her 5 minutes into the period. With just minutes left in the second, Leonoff made her best save of the game as she stopped a puck that had deflected once, if not twice, before reaching her.
Although tired the girls dug deep and played the well. Just one minute into the third period, first-year Candace Lu scored the eventual game winner on a nifty move five-hole. Senior Brooke Bytalan extended the lead by two less than 30 seconds later by going hard to the net on a shot by Cassie Catlow. The onslaught continued and less then a minute later, senior Lilah Fones scored off a blast from the point to put us up 4-1. That’s three goals in a minute and a half! The last goal was a beautiful short-handed snipe top corner by sophomore Jordan Lipson who was fed a beautiful pass by Catlow, for her third point of the night.
