Pomfret School
Varsity Basketball
Pomfret 47 Putnam Science 75
Feb. 16: The boys took on a very talented Putnam Science Academy and battled valiantly for 24 of the 32 minutes. We got off to a slow start, but moved the ball on the offensive end and stopped the ball on the defensive end and fought to a 5 point half time deficit, 28 - 33. Dan Gagnon and Kahari Beaufort each scored 9 points in the first half to lead the way for Pomfret.
The first 6 minutes of the second half saw us continue to battle and even take a brief one-point lead. But PSA’s size and overall talent wore us down as we dealt with foul trouble to crucial players. In a six minute span a 4 point lead jumped to 20 as we couldn’t find the basket, and they couldn’t miss. We could only muster 19 second half points as Putnam Science scored 42.
The boys put together a good effort but we were definitely man-down and eventually it caught up to us.
Stats: Kahari Beaufort - 21 Points (8-17, 3-6) 8 Rebounds, 2 Steals, 2 Blocks, 1 Steal and 2 Turnovers; Ben Sukonik - 2 Points (1-5, 0-0) 3 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 1 Steal, 1 Block, and 1 Turnover;

Pomfret 71 Hyde-Bath 58
Feb. 18: Kahari Beaufort played arguably his best game of the season as he focused on basketball and didn’t get caught up in the little stuff. He played the 5-spot and turned out a 27 point, 12 Rebound, and 7 Assists game; the best basketball line since Josh Paulino in 2007. He was 3 assists shy of a triple-double, a feat very few high schoolers achieve. Danny Gagnon had the hot hand from deep, and Nic Lane was a floor general dishing out a season high 8 assists and he also played one of his best games of the season. Dan Metzgar grabbed 8 Rebounds and added three more steals to his team lead.
The game MVP was Kahari Beaufort with 27 Points (11-18, 4-4) 12 Rebounds, 7 Assists, 3 Blocks, 3 Steals, and 4 Turnovers. Other stats: Nic Lane - 11 Points (5-11, 1-2) 8 Assists, 2 Rebounds, 2 Steals, and 3 Turnovers; Dan Gagnon - 14 Points (5-8, 0-0) 5 Rebounds, 2 Assists and 3 Turnovers; Danny Metzgar - 6 Points ( 3-10, 0-0) 8 Rebounds, 3 Steals, 2 Assists, and 4 Turnovers; Jack Nicholson - 6 Points (3-5, 0-0) 6 Rebounds, 2 Steals, 2 Assists, and 6 Turnovers; Ben Sukonik - 5 Points (2-3, 1-2) 2 Rebounds, 1 Steal and 1 Turnover; Jeffrey Iyalekhue - 2 Points (1-1, 0-0) 1 Rebound and 0 Turnovers; JJ Ahmed 0 Points (0-1, 0-0) 1 Rebound, 1 Block, and 1 Turnover; Malkese Edwards - 1 Block and 1 Turnover; Ian Crouse - 1 Rebound and 1 Turnover.
Varsity Hockey
Pomfret 1 Berkshire 2
Feb. 16: The boys lost a hard-fought battle 2 – 1 to the Berkshire Bears. The first period was unusual in that neither team scored or was whistled for a penalty. The action was back-and-forth, with Berkshire rolling four lines to Pomfret’s three. The Griffins did a great job in the second period of killing off two consecutive penalties – seniors Cam Geary and Connor Quinn both blocked shots at key moments – though Berkshire did score even-strength with 4:45 remaining in the period. Captain Danny Palumbo evened the score at one midway through the third period when he went forehand-to-backhand and tucked it behind the sizeable Berkshire keeper. Even play continued until Berkshire scored with 3:09 remaining in the game on a goal even their head coach described as “controversial.” Regardless, Pomfret took a timeout with 1:19 to go, pulled goalie Nick Ellis ’13 in favor of an extra attacker, and proceeded to promptly win an offensive zone face-off that resulted in several scoring chances but none that found the twine.

Hyde
Varsity Wrestling
Feb. 14: Hyde wrestlers earned 69 team points and an eighth-place overall standing at the annual Class A league tournament, according to coach Wes Jenkins. The Class A’s consist of 13 schools, and features some of New England’s toughest schools. This year we entered the tournament short five weight classes, and seeded 10th out of 13. As Hyde has shown this year, rankings are for those confined by standards of mediocrity. The nine wrestlers we brought left everything on the mat and worked their way into the eight-place position, above many schools which have bested us in dual meets this year.
Some standouts on the day were Marcos Mercado ’13, who was unfortunately placed in the same bracket as the #1-seeded wrestler in New England and lost by technical fall, yet wrestled back for 3rd place defeating Hongsmantip from Worcester Academy (a wrestler who previously defeated him 10-13 at the NNEI’s). Peter Markham ’12 wrestled tough for a first year guy and went 3-3 for the day, finishing in 6th place. Kenrick Vincent ’12, also a first year guy, found his niche on the mat and powered through several opponents before losing in the last round for the 5th and 6th places. Mac McGuire ’11 had a great day and yet again bested his brother from Tabor Academy. He made it to the 3rd and 4th place finals and took 4th after a questionable call by the official in the last 30 seconds of the match. Addison Wheat ’11 was unable to place, but wrestled well for his last match of his Hyde career. He will be missed next year as our 160lb man. Brian Sanz ’11 finished out his first and last year of wrestling honorably with several wins helping him to clinch the 6th place award at the 215lb class.
At the conclusion of the day, Hyde had astonished many of the other teams with their tenacity and grit. They had impeccable sportsmanship and faced each obstacle with poise and determination.
Coach Rich Gorham from Phillips Andover made special note of the Wolfpack’s fighting spirit in his coverage of Class A’s:     “Coach Wes Jenkins has something special building down in Woodstock as Hyde-CT (6-10) has shown great improvement during the season.  Northern Champ Brian Sanz (215) and Class A placer Marcos Mercado (119) are among the Wolfpack’s best, along with Kenrick Vincent (145) and Patrick McGuire (152).”
Mac McGuire and Marcos Mercado have qualified for the New England Tournament where they will face off against the best in the area.
