POMFRET — March 6 the Pomfret varsity wrestling team earned a fourth place crown in the New England Tournament.
Head coach Art Horst said, “Out of over 50 schools trying to qualify wrestlers for the New England tournament and 45 schools who did qualify wrestlers and attended, Pomfret School came in 4th place, behind only Northfield Mount Hermon, Andover, and Belmont Hill.”
He said “We came in ahead of all four schools who placed higher than we did last week at the Western New England tournament, and we achieved our highest ever placing at the New England tournament. Seven of the eight wrestlers we brought with us scored points, and virtually every point counted as we narrowly defeated the schools right behind us in the standings — Exeter, Tabor, Loomis, and St. Paul’s.”
The place-winners were:
Devon MarcAurele ’14 - Champion - Devon pinned his way to the finals where he met a very strong Exeter wrestler. Devon wrestled a smart, controlled match and won by the score of 2-1.
RJ LaBeef ’11 - Champion - RJ dominated the field, collecting three pins along the way. RJ is only the second wrestler in Pomfret’s wrestling history to win multiple New England titles.
Elliot Granoff ’11 - 4th place - Elliot was dominant on his way to the semi-finals, where he lost. Then he fought into the consolation finals. It was great to have him back with us.
Tomo Okamoto ’11 - 5th place - After losing in overtime in the semi-finals, Tomo had to reach down to fight his way to fifth place. Tomo gave us two very convincing victories on his way to the semi-finals.
Alastair Hewitt ’12 - 8th place - Alastair worked very hard in a tough weight class, and his finish means that he just misses qualifying for the National Prep tournament, but he is the first alternate in his weight class.
Yugin Lam ’13 and John Dean ’11 also scored points for Pomfret. Andrew Orobator ’11 did not score points but was valient his efforts in what was, by a wide margin, the deepest weight class at the tournament.
Pomfret was represented by Devon, RJ, Tomo and Elliot at the National Prep Tournament at Lehigh University. Placing 8th in the tournament, RJ LaBeef was named a National Prep All-American. Pomfret School
