Dr. James W.
Hall Jr.
PUTNAM — Dr. James W. Hall Jr., 89, of Ballou Street, went to a better place Aug. 27, 2012.  He was the husband of Patricia Shaw.  They were married on April 1, 1944, in S. Augusta, N.C.
Born in 1922 in Putnam, he was the son of the late James W. Hall Sr. and Blanche (Wood) Hall.
Dr. Hall was an optometrist for 47 years in Putnam, practicing first with his father and then independently, retiring‘ in February of 1994.  Dr. Hall was also a Mason for over 60 years.  He graduated from Putnam High School, Illinois College of Optometry, and the Gesell Institute of Child Development at Yale New Haven.
Dr. Hall was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII having served in the 11th Army Airways Communication System.  He served in Italy and North Africa and then was honorably discharged on March 11, 1946.  He was a member of American Legion Post 13 and LFUMC, Living Faith United Methodist Church (formerly Putnam Methodist Church).  He was a Sunday School Teacher and later a Sunday School Superintendent.  Dr. Hall was also a Lay Leader and was instrumental in building the Education Building on the Church property.
He was active in the Boy Scouts of America Troop 25 in his youth and then went on to become an assistant Scout Master to Ken Gunsales for many years, eventually becoming a Scout Master.
Dr. Hall collected antique cars and planes.  He had a commercial pilot’s license with an instrument flight instructor’s certificate.  He taught many people in the area to fly.
In addition to his wife, Dr. Hall leaves his sons, Dr. James Hall III (Missy) of St. Augustine, Fla., and Russell Hall (Nanci) of Thompson; daughters Tamara Hall-Heidelburger (Jody) of Woodstock, and twin daughters Faith St. Piere (Charles) of Sturbridge, and Florence Lajeunesse (Carl) of Coventry; his sister, Joyce Bell of Putnam; seven grandchildren: Michael Deary, Shannon Zifcak, Jason Hall, Neil James Lajeunesse, Alicia Ann Lejeunesse, Austin Hall, and Victoria McNeal; three step grandchildren Michael, Lauren, and Kiersten Heidelberger; and four great-grandchildren, Jacob, Grace, and Benjamin Zifcak and Brenden Womack.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 15 in the Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam, followed by a Funeral Service at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 16 in Living Faith United Methodist Church, 53 Grove St, Putnam.  Burial with Military Honors follows in Putnam Heights Cemetery.  Donations: LFUMC, 53 Grove St. Putnam, CT. 

Athena Anderson
POMFRET CENTER — Athena Georgia (Poletes) Anderson, 94, of Modock Road, died  July 30, 2012, at Westview Health Care Center in Dayville.
Athena was the wife of John William Anderson Jr., of  Indian Rocks Beach, Fla., for 56 years until his death in 2003.  She was the mother of  Dr. Bill Anderson of Pomfret Center and Elaine Anderson, of Indian Rocks Beach, who predeceased her.   She was the daughter of George and Katherine Poletes of  Patras, Greece, and the sister of Katherine Georgia Titley, of Indian Rocks Beach, who predeceased her.
Ya-Ya Anderson acquired many friends from her years in Rhode Island, Florida and Connecticut.  She was a graduate of the Pembroke School of Business and Aldrich High School.  She loved her best friend; Kay Puls of Maine, her friends from Calvary Episcopal Church, walking the beach and the Red Sox. 
She leaves a son; Dr. Bill Anderson of Pomfret Center, his partner Donna Grant; an adopted daughter; Katherine Coucher of Middletown, R.I.; grandson; Timotheos Anderson and his partner Matthew Swanlund of W. Warwick, R.I.; many adopted grandchildren; Gabe and Branden Grant, Shelby and Ryan Colwell, Sothea, Seth and Cody Semmelrock; her dachshund; Tobi.

Marie L. Moriarty,
co-owned business
THOMPSON — Marie Moriarty, 87, of Thurber Road, died Aug. 28, 2012, in Matulaitis Nursing Home.  She was the wife of the late Leo Moriarty, who died Feb. 15, 2010, having celebrated 64 years of marriage. 
Born in 1925 in Rochester, N.H., she was the daughter of the late Maynard Sr. and Mary (Wilson) Freeman, in a family of eight.
Marie was employed over the years in various forms of work including the Portsmouth Navy Yard, the shoe manufacturing field, waitressing, and was co-owner/broker of Moriarty Real Estate in Charlton for several years. Mrs. Moriarty enjoyed gardening, cooking, flea markets.
She leaves two daughters, Donna Darby (Kenneth) of Thompson, and Brenda Verdone  (Steven) of Thompson; brother, Milard Freeman of Merrimack, N.H.; three sisters, Catherine Stevens of Las Vegas, Phylis Ferrigan of Rochester, and Joyce Lepine of Farmington, N.H.; six grandchildren, Sean and Timothy Moriarty, Karen Lemery (Shawn), Holly Withers, and Christopher and Deanna Verdone; two special great-grandchildren, Lindsay and Benjamin Lemery. She was predeceased by her only son, Dennis Moriarty in 1989; brother, the late Maynard Freeman Jr.; sisters, Sylvia Hinkle and Gloria Freeman. 
The funeral was private. Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam.

Gladys Parmentier,

THOMPSON — Gladys Parmentier, 70, of Quaddick Town Farm Road, died Aug. 26, 2012, at Day Kimball Hospital, Putnam.
She was the wife of the late William Parmentier.
Gladys was born Sept. 20, 1941, in Putnam. She was the daughter of the late Ernest and Azalea Bourbeau.
Gladys enjoyed camping with her husband and trips to New Hampshire and the ocean.
She loved vacations with family and friends and loved going shopping. 
Gladys worked at many hair salons and was a great hair dresser.
She leaves her children, Danielle Fafard (Gene) of Thompson, Kenny Burwell (Charlotte) of Danielson and Todd Burwell of Las Vegas; grandchildren, Keith Parmentier Jr., Brittany Beard, Halie Danielson, Logan Danielson; great-grandchildren, Brendan, Natlia and Addison. She was predeceased by her husband of 46 years William Parmentier; son Keith Parmentier Sr.

Arthur L. Back
MANCHESTER — Arthur Lincoln Back, 73, of Woodbridge Street, Manchester, died unexpectedly Aug. 31, 2012, at home.
He was born Feb. 8, 1939, in Putnam, son of the late Lincoln Grant and Lena Marion (Young) Back. 
Arthur worked at the Shady Glen restaurant in Manchester for over 25 years and also the Manchester Stop & Shop.
He had made his home in Manchester most of his life. Arthur was active with the Special Olympics, including his love for playing bocce, track and field and the softball throw.
He also enjoyed playing Miniature Golf and riding on the Essex train, his time at Camp Kennedy in Manchester.
He was an avid flower and vegetable gardener and enjoyed his pipe.
He leaves his life partner of over 30 years, Carol Ann Southmayd of Manchester.
The Funeral Services is at noon Sept. 6 at Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove St
