Sept. 30 the NECONN boy’s U14 soccer team hosted Hebron and came away with a 4-0 victory. It was a tight battle for the first half when both teams failed to find the back of the net. NECONN’s front line of Ian Sohan, Josh Resnick and William Hamill created multiple scoring opportunities, but the Hebron defense was solid and turned away all shots on net. On NECONN’s defensive end of the field, Garrett Sward, Collin Singleton, Tristan Anderson and Zach Gagnon equaled Hebron’s efforts and played composed soccer in front of goalie William Liscomb, who recorded the shutout on the afternoon.
In the second half, NECONN came out on fire and just minutes into the contest scored their first goal of the afternoon. Tristan Anderson started the push up field when he found Max Paro open in the middle. Max would put a through ball on the foot of Evan Cunningham who buried the ball into the back of the net. Before the eight-minute mark of the half, NECONN would score two more times to take a 3-0 lead.
NECONN’s second goal came when Sam Paul passed a ball back to Elijah Dufour just outside the box. Elijah one-timed a lofted ball at the net, and it just snuck under the crossbar and over the Hebron goalie’s outstretched hands for the score.
A minute later, after strong midfield work by Ethan Werstler and Marco Suriano, Cunningham would collect a loose ball and use his tremendous speed to create a breakaway. After a shoulder-to-shoulder sprint with a Hebron defender, Evan skillfully notched the team’s third goal of the afternoon. With fifteen minutes left in the game, Dufour would again be in on a scoring play when he crossed a ball into the box for David Redfield. Redfield’s shot was blocked, but Travis Hayward was there to score on the rebound to make the final score 4-0.
League play is suspended next weekend for Columbus Day, but the team will participate in the Columbia/Windham Tournament Oct. 6 and 7 , matching up with some of the top U14 teams in Connecticut.
