Leland Bradley,
WWII vet
PUTNAM — Leland Shaw Bradley of Putnam, and Dade City, Fla., died Jan. 1, 2013. He was the husband of Claire (Robitaille) Bradley. They were married June 24, 1943, in Columbus, Ohio, and recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary.
He was a graduate of Putnam High School, Class of 1941, and the H.H. Ellis Technical (Aviation) School. Leland also graduated from the Ohio Institute of Aeronautics in Columbus, the Rhode Island Radio School and the National Radio Institute in Washington, D.C. He received his bachelor’s from Central Connecticut University and his master’s degree from UConn. Mr. Bradley was the recipient of three different National Science Foundation Grants to study modern mathematics at Baldwin Wallace College in Cleveland, Ohio, and Simmons College in Boston. He also studied mechanical engineering at Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I., and Shrivenham University in Wilshire, England. Mr. Bradley was employed for several years as a FM licensed aviation specialist with the New England Helicopter Service at Hillsgrove, R.I., and as a licensed instructor with East Coast Aviation.
He was then employed for eight years as an engineer at the Naval Air Station in Quonset Point, RI. For the next 27 years he was a mathematics instructor at the H.H. Ellis Vocational Technical School at Danielson, moving on to academic supervisor and Evening School director. Before retiring, he was the acting assistant director of the school. He was also an extension instructor in Education for Central Connecticut State University.
He served in WWII as an aircraft engine specialist with the U.S. 8th Air Force Division in Europe, and later as an aviation specialist with the U.S. - British Lend-Lease Office in London. Mr. Bradley was a member of the first Putnam Consolidation Committee and was vice chairman of the Putnam Zoning Commission for 18 years. His favorite hobby was travel. He and his wife were very active in the Airstream Trailer/RV Club in which they were officers. They traveled to every state including an eight-week stay in Alaska. Their travels took them throughout the Caribbean, Central and South America as well as several lengthy trips to the British Isles. For six weeks they toured 10 European countries in their RV.
Mr. Bradley was an avid genealogist, having published “The Ancestors of Leland S. Bradley.” As a direct descendant of John and Priscilla Alden of the Mayflower, he became a member of the Mayflower Society and the Alden Kindred of America. He enjoyed local history and was a member of the Aspinock Historical Society of Putnam. He also enjoyed music and was a student of the Lowery Organ. He and his wife spent winters at Travelers Rest Resort in Dade City Fla., summers in Brewster on Cape Cod and falls in Vermont.
He was the son of the late Leland Wagner Bradley and Lena (Shaw) Bradley.
He leaves a daughter, Cynthia Mildred Bradley and her partner Brian of Pomfret Center, and a son, Leland John Bradley (Colleen) of Hebron; four grandchildren, James Michael Bradley and (Kenna) of Pomfret Center, Matthew Alden Bradley and his partner Jennifer, of Pomfret Center, Jessica Lee Gates (Gregory) of Uncasville, Joanne Lee Rawson (Benjamin) of Thompson, as well as seven great-grandchildren. His sister, Mildred Elizabeth Bradley, predeceased him.
The Funeral Service was Jan. 7 at the Living Faith United Methodist Church, Putnam, with burial in Grove Street Cemetery, Putnam, with military honors. Donations: Living Faith United Methodist Church, 53 Grove St., Putnam. 06260.
LeRoy H. Flynn
former plumber
WOODSTOCK — LeRoy H. Flynn, 72, of Rocky Hill Road, died Jan. 6, 2013, at home. He was the husband of Carol (Gregoire) Flynn for 49 years. Born in 1940 in New London, he was the son of the late Charles and Virginia (Newbury) Flynn.
Mr. Flynn worked as a plumber for UConn and as a security guard for Brooklyn Correctional Facility. He also worked at Union Engraving and Putnam Hertzl. He was a member of the American Legion Mayotte-Viens Post 13 of Putnam and past president of Eastern Connecticut Police Association.
LeRoy enjoyed talking about politics over his morning cup of coffee.
In addition to his wife, LeRoy he leaves his sister, Lucy Terry of Jewett City; nieces and nephews; and his dogs, London, Aspen, and Tammy.
Visitation is at 10 a.m. Jan. 10 in Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam, followed by a funeral home service at 11 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary Cemetery. Donations: NECCOG Animal Control, 125 Putnam Pike, Dayville, CT 06241.
Nancy E. Cox,

BROOKLYN — Nancy Edwards Cox, 92, of Brooklyn, died Jan. 3, 2013. She was born March 10, 1920, in Southbridge, Mass., daughter of the late Wardwell Marcy and Marian (Cook) Edwards. She spent her youth in Southbridge, attending Mary E. Wells HS and then Stoneleigh Burnham School and Colby Sawyer College in New Hampshire.
After her marriage to William Cox, they made their home in Brimfield, Mass., for 33 years. Following her retirement she moved to Richmond, N.H., where she did volunteer work in the Keene hospital, the hospice organization and especially the Humane Society rescue facility. In 2000 she returned to Connecticut, and moved to Creamery Brook Retirement Village in 2004.
She was an avid equestrian all her life, riding even into her 60s. Nancy had a great love of horses and dogs. For several years she and her family raised English Setters. She was a great outdoors person, enjoyed deer and bird hunting and all sports, both as a participant and a spectator. Nancy also loved reading and knitting.
She leaves her children: Ellen Holley of Woodstock, and Wardwell Burtis Cox (Shirley) of Brimfield, three grandchildren: Wardwell (Burt) Cox (Johanna) of Brookfield, Mass., Angela Paris Gisleson of Putnam, and Jaime Paris Boisvert (Jean-Louis) of Woodstock; six great-grandchildren: Patrick, Aidan, Elise, Carleigh, Ella and Colbie; two nephews.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 19 in the East Woodstock Congregational Church, with burial at a later date in Oakridge Cemetery, Southbridge. Donations: ”Nancy E. Grace (King) Smith
Grace Smith, 91, died Dec. 31, 2012, at Regency Heights of Danielson. Grace was born on Aug. 4 1921, to the late Jennie (Broughton) and Clark King in Thompson.
Grace graduated from Tourtellotte Memorial High School. She married George T. Smith on Oct. 29 1944. He died Jan. 15 1977. Grace worked for many years in the men’s department of Bugbee’s Department Store in Putnam. She spent most of her life working in retail, retiring from Caldor’s as assistant manager.
Grace leaves her sons, Gregory Smith (Marilyn) of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Gary Smith (Linda) of Ashford; grandchildren, Scott Smith, Rebecca Dima (Joe), all of Port St. Lucie, Jamie Kimok (Jeff), Ian Smith and his partner Kailyn Allison, all of Killingly; great-grandchildren, Ashley Dima of Port St. Lucie, Alex Stringer of Killingly, Katie Kimok of Gouverneur, N.Y., Cyrus and Jaxsun Smith, Dylan and Derek Peterson, all of Killingly.

Stuart Hibbard,
dairy farmer
WOODSTOCK — Stuart Chandler Hibbard, 82, of Woodstock, died unexpectedly Dec. 27, 2012, at home. He was born June 16, 1930, in Putnam, son of the late Clifford C. and Olive (Buell) Hibbard.
Stuart was a dairy farmer. He had made his home in Woodstock all his life and was a long time member of the N. Woodstock Congregational Church. Stuart was a dedicated 60-year-member of the Muddy Brook Fire Department in Woodstock. He enjoyed repairing and restoring old tractors. He leaves his brother, Russell Hibbard of Woodstock; three nephews Loring, Bryant and Richard; two nieces Joann and Lisa; grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother Carlton Hibbard.

Marge Eaton,

POMFRET — Marge Kilburn Eaton of Pomfret died Dec. 31, 2012, after a short Hospice stay at Matulaitis Nursing Home in Putnam.
She was born Aug. 25, 1922, in Willimantic, daughter of the late Wilbur W. and Corine (Bernier) Kilburn. Marge married her high school sweetheart, Harry E. Eaton, MD, on June 20, 1942. They were married for 46 years, and lived in Pomfret since 1952.
After raising four children, she went back to school and graduated from Eastern Connecticut State College in 1971. She taught at Killingly Central School primarily as a first grade teacher from 1971 to 1992. She was a corporator of Day Kimball Hospital for many years. She was a member of the Teachers’ Association Alpha Delta Kappa. She enjoyed going to the Rhode Island beach with her family, creating theorem stencil paintings, knitting, writing children’s short stories, reading and listening to novels, and calligraphy.
She leaves four children: son Harry E. Eaton (Theresa) of Woodstock, son Marshall L. Eaton (Ginny) of Pomfret, son J. Wesley Eaton (Gloria) of Woodstock, daughter Marilyn Eaton and her lifetime partner Richard Keeler of Pomfret; five grandchildren: Thomas, David, Lisa Ann Eaton, Julie Bruning, and Brian Paquin and 10 1/2 great-grandchildren. Marge was predeceased by her parents, three brothers: Wilbur D. Kilburn; John Donald Kilburn; Alvin N. Kilburn; four sisters: Alice T. Abel; Lois A Jenkins; Rita C. Eldredge; Marion T. Conboy.

Dorothy R. Lewis,

PUTNAM — Dorothy R. Lewis, 92, of Addison Street died Jan. 3, 2012, at Matulaitis Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late George Lewis.
Dorothy was born July 6, 1920, in Pascoag, R.I., daughter of the late William and Mary (Moore) Ray.
Dorothy was a communicant of St. Mary Church in Putnam.
She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella, Embroidery Club, St. Mary League of Catholic Woman and the Aspinock Historical Society.
She made her home in Putnam over 90 years.
She leaves a foster sister Kathleen Bigras of N. Windham; two nieces, Deborah Poitras and Janet Scott. Dorothy also leaves her good friend Irene Crabtree of Putnam.

Vivian M. Moulin,

WOODSTOCK — Vivian M. Moulin, 89, of Woodstock, died Dec. 31, 2012, at the Matulaitis Nursing Home, Putnam.
She was the wife of Roland Moulin.
They were married Sept. 7, 1942, in St. James Church, Danielson.
She was born March 6, 1923, in Danielson, daughter of the late Almadie and Mary Albina (White) Malboeuf.
She had made her home in Woodstock most of her life, a communicant of Most Holy Trinity Church in Pomfret, a member of the St. Monica’s Guild and Woodstock Senior Citizens. Vivian was a student at Killingly High School.
She was a wonderful stay-at-home mom and then worked at Woodstock Line Company, Annhurst College and Data General in Woodstock.
She leaves her children: Roland Louis Moulin (Anne-Marie) of Putnam, Vivian Rose Moulin Morse (Wayne) of E. Longmeadow, Mass., Nanette Marie Polito (Joseph) of Hebron, Ky.; grandchildren: Pamela Moulin Holden (John), Roland Charles Moulin (Angela), Melissa Morse Walsh (Greg), Ashley Morse Kelleher (Josh), Christopher Polito, Alexandra Polito; Great-grandchildren: Barrett and Reid Holden, Kayla and Luke Moulin, Jack and Cole Walsh. She was predeceased by her siblings: Eugene Malboeuf, Doris LaVallee, Aldore Malboeuf, Lillian Shinkiewicz, Robert Malboeuf, Amadie Malboeuf and Donald Malboeuf.
Visitation with the family is from 10 to 11 a.m. Jan. 12 at Most Holy Trinity Church, Pomfret, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at the church.
Burial will be later in St. Joseph Cemetery, Dayville.

Harry D. Pattee Jr.,

WOODSTOCK — Harry Daniel Pattee Jr., 92, of Woodstock, died Jan. 2, 2013, at the Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam. He was the husband of Janice (White) Pattee. They were married Dec. 26, 1942, and she died in 2003.
He was born Jan. 17, 1920, in Wallingford, son of Harry D. and Jean (Stephens) Pattee Sr.
He had made his home in Wallingford for many years and was a member of the Wallingford Congregational Church. He was active with Wallingford town government including serving as a fire commissioner, and on the Town Council. Harry was a leader in the New Haven County 4-H Club.
In 1967 he moved to Woodstock where he was a dairy farmer and operated the OX-Bow Acres Dairy Farm with his son-in-law and grandson for over 45 years. From 1969 to 1979 he served on the Board of Selectman and for a number of years as first selectman. He was a founding member of the board that created the Northeast Department of Health and had attended the E. Woodstock Congregational Church.
He leaves his four daughters: Barbara Rich (Fred) of Woodstock, Lynn Coppinger (Stephen) of Wakefield, R.I., Joan Pearsall (John) of W. Winfield, N.Y., Lois Cleveland (Richard) of Missouri City, Texas; 10 grandchildren: Fred Rich Jr., Craig Rich, Lisa Dolonich, Nelia Breault, Suzanne Culver, Jonathan Pearsall, Jodi Pearsall, Cynthia Cleveland, Sarah Cleveland, Gregory Cleveland; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Cynthia Boyd,

WOODSTOCK — Cynthia Marie (Hebert) Boyd, 59, of Woodstock, died Jan. 6, 2013, in UMass/Memorial Healthcare, Worcester, after a short illness.
She was born and raised in Waterville, Maine, daughter of J. Emile and Alyce (Poirier) Hebert. She graduated from Mount Merici Academy in Waterville in 1971 and then from Assumption College in Worcester with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1975. She later earned her Master of education degree from Worcester State College. She lived in Wilton, N.H., Webster and Dudley, before moving to Woodstock in 1993.
Mrs. Boyd was currently a mathematics teacher as well as the Department Coordinator of the Mathematics Department at Shepherd Hill Regional High School in Dudley, where she taught since 1977. Previously, she taught math at Wilton High School in Wilton. She was a class adviser for many years and was this year’s senior class adviser. She once coached the Math Team and also the High School Quiz Show Team. The National Honor Society Chapter at Shepherd Hill received many awards under her leadership. She belonged to the NEA, MTA and DCTA and served on the Board of Directors of the National Honor Society for the Mass. Secondary School Administrators’ Association, Inc. At one time she coached the school’s ski club.
Cindy was a member and deacon at the First Congregational Church of Dudley and volunteered for many committees. She was a member of the Women’s Golf League at Thompson Speedway Golf Course. She enjoyed golfing, skiing and bicycling.
She leaves her husband of 20 years, Thompson W. Boyd; a daughter, Lee Meredith Boyd; a sister, Colleen Robillard of Narragansett, R.I.; a brother, Dr. James Hebert of Charlotte, Vt.; her step mother-in-law, Marilyn (Blair) Boyd of Dudley.
