In girls’ basketball the team had another outstanding game at home with a 41-34 victory over the Griswold Wolverines. The Lady Centaurs are now 4-2 on their home court and 4-8 overall. They need to win at least 4 of their final 8 games to make the state tournament.

She hit two big “and one’s” in the fourth quarter when the game got close. Maryanna Leonard had 5 points and 5 rebounds. Colleen Topliff had some key baskets and she finished with 7. Jan. 10 the girls came out with energy and fire on route to a 42-22 victory over Tourtellette Memorial High School. From the tip to the final horn, Woodstock Academy was playing great defense and connecting on offense. Featuring their full court press, the Centaurs got off to a fast start and they led 15-5 after the first quarter. Things slowed down in the second quarter for both teams as it became more of a half-court game and the Tigers played a pack in 2-3 zone. Woodstock managed to get some offense going late in the quarter and when the teams went into the locker room the Academy led 21 - 7. In the second half Woodstock continued with their aggressive and intense defense and then held the Tigers scoreless in the third quarter. Woodstock Academy held a 20 point lead most of the 4th quarter on route to the 42 to 22 victory. Once again the Centaurs showed great hustle, team play, and a fighting spirit.

Jan. 8 the boys’ basketball team took it to Norwich Free Academy 48-31. From the tip to the final horn, Woodstock Academy was firing on all cylinders. The Centaurs got off to a fast start leading NFA 10-0 to start the game and things only got better from there. Woodstock held a sizable margin most of the first half and, as time expired, Chris Lowry chucked up a desperation three point shot at the buzzer which found the bottom of the net giving the Centaurs a commanding halftime lead. Woodstock held NFA to only 10 points in the first half. In the second half NFA made a run cutting the Centaur lead to 12 with only a few minutes remaining in the third quarter, but Coach Smith called time out and settled the players down and  Woodstock Academy went on another run of their own. Woodstock Academy held a 20 point lead most of the 4th quarter on route to the 48 to 31 victory. Once again the Centaurs showed tremendous hustle, grit, and unselfish team play. The Centaurs are now 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the ECC Large Division. They are currently ranked 9th in the State of Connecticut.

Jan. 7 in gymnastics the defending New England Champion gymnastics team beat Windham High School 146.05 to 73.55. What was impressive about that was that Woodstock Academy put up a score of over 146 which if they continue on that path will put them amongst the top teams in the State and in New England again this year.  What is even more impressive than that is that the gymnastics team put up that score without defending all-around New England Champion Shaila Segal who is out with an injury. Leading the way for the Centaur’s was Jackie Deary who once again was the all-around champion posting a score of 37.8. Jackie placed first in all four of the events last night. Second in the all-around was Courtney Osborne with a score of 36.45. Third in the all-around was Nickie Deary with a score of 35.6. Head Coach Robin Deary-Fillmore commented that Nickie was the MVP of yesterday’s meet because of the tremendous improvement she has shown. With the scores that she is putting up makes Woodstock Academy an even more dangerous team than they were last year.
