Because I Had To… Update
When it comes to technology, I am slightly ‘old-school’. I embrace certain aspects of technology and certainly have the latest devices, but I am a bit slow to adapt to the software … or at least I feel like I am. I am sure that Alexa can do way more for me than I ask of her, but as soon as I feel comfortable with relying on her to tell me the weather, or play a song or remind me to do something; my next request seems to be beyond her reach of resolve. And that will require that I purchase something or other in a subscription or App; so our relationship moves back into the ‘silent treatment’ phase.
If I actually knew how to properly phrase my questions, I would welcome the opportunity for the conversation, wherein I could explain to Her “It’s not YOU, it’s ME.”
Although I am quite certain that if I were stranded on a desert island with wifi and my cell phone, I could still effectively manage my life, I am just not 100 percent completely comfortable with all that is categorized as technology. What makes me get more comfortable with using my available Apps and software and devices, is when I figure out how things work.
In a nut shell, I like technology that stays the same. Unfortunately, the very foundation of technology is built on the fact that it is constantly changing and updating!
As a result, it seems to be a consistent source of stress in my life, and just when I think I’ve got something figured out, there is an update to the program and suddenly, everything looks and feels different. I find it super annoying. I don’t actually care if things work better or more efficiently after an update --- I want things to stay the same and look the same and work the same.
Truth be told, I always ignore the signal on my phone which indicates that there is an update. If the reminder thingy pops up on my screen declaring that I have an update, I always hit, remind me later or tomorrow. It does and then I ignore that one, too.
However, as it happens, my husband loves updates! He is a fan of faster and better and newer and cooler and makes sure that I, too, also get access to the most updated versions. Meanwhile, I go into panic mode thinking that the off and on of my phone, required of the update process, will certainly delete my alarm setting or my calendar appointments…
There are some updates to technology that I embrace, like to a TV or a car, but I’m sure, since I only replace these things every once in a while, it’s because I have years to get used to how it all works. After all, I’m someone who prefers to crinkle paper and stack logs strategically in order to make a fire in my fireplace rather than pressing a button for a gas flame, but then again, to start the fire, I now use a long lighter torch thingy rather than a match….
