Senior Ryan Pambuku, who’s been the catalyst behind the success of the Plainfield boys’ basketball program this season, was rewarded for his consistent play by being named the January Eastern Connecticut Conference Athlete of the Month. The award is presented monthly courtesy of the Byrnes Agency of Dayville, Norwich and Woodstock.
Pambuku surpassed the 1000-point career plateau with a 15-point effort in a Panther victory over Killingly on Jan. 10. During the month Pambuku scored in double figures in all 10 Plainfield games, for an impressive 24.8 points per game. His scoring heroics also included a career-high single game effort of 37 points on Jan. 10 against Stonington.
His high-octane month raised his season total to 440 points for 22.0 points per game average. He’s also helped coach Bob Arremony’s Panthers achieve an 11-9 overall record and entry into the Eastern Connecticut Conference Tournament. Plainfield has also qualified for the CIAC Tournament.
Pambuku has been receiving considerable attention from a number of colleges of late. He aspires to continue his basketball career next season on the collegiate level.
The female ECC Athlete of the Month Award went to East Lyme senior Jenna Schumacher, a standout on the Vikings women’s basketball team, who is headed to Amherst College to play basketball next season.
