Teams make

quick work

of Palmer

winter prep

Pomfret School's Community Service Team and friends swept through the Palmer Arboretum in Woodstock and got it ready for the long winter ahead.

Olinda LaBeef, one of the coaches for the Community Service Team, accompanied another coach and 21 students to the arboretum last week.

The team was accompanied by the JV field hockey team, which volunteered to help out the Community Service Team.

LaBeef said the group raked, cleaned up the area and planted bulbs.

Bill Brower, head of the arboretum's board, said the kids did a wonderful job. The arboretum depends very much on volunteers and the local schools always pitch in to help, he said.

LaBeef said the Community Service Team is formed each trimester at Pomfret School for those who do not take part in sports.

Community Service Teams have helped the Pomfret Public Library, taken part in the Walktober, worked at the Connecticut Audubon Society at Pomfret and helped the Sterling school. 

In addition, this year the team went to help out at the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp.

"We also do other things as they come along," she said.

She added that next trimester she believes the team will go back to working with the Arc of Quinebaug Valley.
