In a light week of softball action local high school and prep school teams enjoyed success on the diamond. Woodstock Academy after dropping its season opener last week, picked up a pair of convincing victories over two rugged foes.
Despite a loss to Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division Killingly, the Tourtellotte juggernaut went to 4-1 on the season with a big win over Constitution State Conference foe Ellis Tech. Plainfield was victorious in its season opener.
In the prep ranks Pomfret enjoyed a 1-1 week, while Marianapolis lost two games to fall to 1-6 on the season.
Woodstock Asserts Itself
with 2 Wins
Rylee Hehir, who transferred to Woodstock this year, paid immediate dividends for the Centaurs as she tripled and scored a run to lead her mates to a 4-3 hard fought win over Montville. Alexa Pearson scored twice for Woodstock. The Lady Centaurs opened the week with a satisfying 8-2 win over Killingly off the bat of Clara Sarantopolous, who had two hits and three runs batted in. Meghan Labbe also had a pair of hits for the winners, while driving in a pair of runs in the win. Hehir had a two-run round tripper against Norwich Free Academy but it wasn’t enough as the Centaurs lost to the Wildcats 8-4. Woodstock is 2-2 and 0-1 in the ECC Large Division.
Killingly rode the bat of Sue Rodriguez in a lopsided 10-2 win over Tourtellotte in its other contest of the week. The Lady Tigers bounced back with 26-1 shellacking of Ellis Tech with a 29-hit attack. Carinne Sosnowski had a single, double and triple in the win. Her teammates Michaela Godzik had a five-hit game, while Christina Kopacz and Crystal Daly each had four hits for the winners. Killingly enjoyed another big game in strolling past New London 17-2 behind the tosses and bat of Taylor Duchesneau. She struck out five and had a triple and two runs batted in. Rodriguez also had a triple for the 2-1 and 0-1 ECC Medium Division Redgals. Chivon Burns rose to the occasion on offense and defense in leading Plainfield to a 4-3 win over a stubborn St. Bernard team. Burns had a pair of doubles for the 1-1 Lady Panthers. Ellis Tech won its only game of the week8-1 over Norwich Tech. Sheridan Murphy struck out 11 in the win for the 2-2 and 1-0 CSC East Lady Eagles. Autumn Jackson contributed a double in the win.
Pomfret School opened its week with a 9-8 win over local prep rival Marianapolis. The Lady Knights also lost to Chase Collegiate despite two hits by Christina Doherty. The Lady Griffs then traveled to Easthampton, Mass., where they were dropped 8-3 by Williston-Northampton, falling to 1-1 in the early goings. Makenna Newkirk had three hits and Elizabeth Berard contributed a pair of hits in the losing effort for Pomfret.
