The Killingly Redmen opened the CIAC postseason playoffs in spectacular fashion beating visiting sixth-seed Bunnell High School 27-7 in front of a rain drenched but elated hometown crowd.  The rain soaked field played into Killingly’s hand as the Redmen used their running game in subduing the Bulldogs and limiting the visitor’s passing game.

Spencer Lockwood, who came into the game with 1,927 yards from scrimmage and 23 touchdowns to his credit, continued his assault on the record book scoring three touchdowns and running wild for 302 yards on 35 carries.  He was the entire show for Killingly, which had 45 offensive plays in the contest.

Killingly, using the clock to its advantage with its ground game, scored in every period, while Bunnell only managed to reach paydirt in the final stanza.  Lockwood opened the scoring in the initial period with a 35-yard touchdown scamper, igniting the home fans.  He followed that score with a 49-yard touchdown run in the second period, putting Killingly on top 14-0 at halftime.

The third-period scoring came through the air for the Redmen when quarterback Kyle Derosier hit big tight end Jake Gauthier on a 16-yard aerial strike.  Derosier was very efficient on the night, throwing only twice and completing both passes.

Lockwood literally broke loose for his final score.  After seemingly being stopped at the line of scrimmage Lockwood kept the legs churning and broke away for a 63-yard touchdown run for the icing on the cake.  Lockwood’s performance put him over the 2,000-yard mark for the season.  He currently has 2,229 yards and 26 touchdowns in 11 games.

The Redmen defense was up to the occasion turning in two interceptions and a pair of sacks.  Bret Long and Lockwood had the interceptions and Jeff Ward and Kelsey Rhines recorded the sacks.

The win raises Killingly’s record to 10-1 on the season with the only blemish coming at the hands of New London.  Last season the Redmen also advanced to the semifinals of the Class M postseason where they were defeated by eventual champion Bloomfield.  On Monday, Dec. 12 Killingly, the #3 seed, traveled to New Haven for a contest against #2 seed Hillhouse in hopes of advancing to the championship game this season.
