Cornwall commits
PUTNAM — April 21 Putnam Science Academy guard Jaheam Cornwall committed to play basketball at Gardner Webb next season.
Cornwall has been sensation for the Mustangs since he first stepped foot on the hardwood two years ago. Cornwall has been a starter at the point guard position and has been a huge part of the program’s back-to-back Final Four appearances.
Cornwall’s first year at PSA he led the team with 5 assists per game. Cornwall also averaged 8 points and shot 45% from three. This past season he averaged 12 points, 5 assists and again shot 45% from three. Cornwall left as a starter for the Mustangs with a record of 71-11 in two seasons.
“Jaheam is just a winner, simply as that,” Putnam Science Head Coach Tom Espinosa said. “You knew what you were getting every day from him, never took a day off. We are going to miss him tremendously here at PSA.” Cornwall’s top three schools included Maine and Wagner but ultimately he felt most at home and comfortable with Gardner Webb. The ability to contribute early either as a start or getting meaningful minutes off the bench as a freshman was also a big part of his decision. Ultimately Cornwall wanted to get away from home to have new experiences and meet new people.
