BRISTOL, R.I. — Emma Guillot, a Roger Williams University student from Dayville, has been named a Hassenfeld Student Leadership Fellow.

WILLIMANTIC — Two local musicians at Eastern Connecticut State University performed in the Concert Band’s annual spring concert: Mackenzie Muscara ’17 of Dayville who played percussion and majors in music; and Charles Seivard ’15 of Woodstock who played bass.

WILLIMANTIC — Kelly Huhtanen, a student at ECSU, had her poem published in the 2017 edition of the student literary journal “Eastern Exposure.” Huhtanen hails from Pomfret Center and majors in Elementary Education and English. “My poem was inspired by a classmate who took her life far too soon,” said Huhtanen. “I couldn’t think of a better place for this poem’s publication. ‘Eastern Exposure’ is a great outlet to speak directly to my peers. I really had to push myself to polish my writing so I could meet publishing standards and it’s a great accomplishment.”

WILLIMANTIC — Several local students took part in the Third Annual CREATE Conference at Eastern Connecticut State University took place on April 21. CREATE stands for “Celebrating Research Excellence and Artistic Talent at Eastern,” and is the University’s premier conference showcasing student research and creative activity. Participants included: 

Michaela Anderson ’18 of Woodstock who majors in Secondary Education and presented a poster titled “The Impact of Robotics on Society.”

Jessica Dodd ’19 of Thompson who majors in Communication and presented photography as well as a poster titled “Social Media Influences.”

Tracy Johns ’17 of Woodstock who majors in Social Work and presented a poster titled “Alcohol Behaviors Among Undergraduates: The Impate of Majors, Spirituality, and Familial and Societal Influences.”

Elizabeth Myers ’18 of Killingly who majors in Social Work and presented a poster titled “Effects of Adverse Life Experiences on College Major Choice.”

Haylee Olson ’18 of Thompson who majors in Social Work and presented a poster titled “Financial Impacts on Midlife Divorce for Women.”

Ashley Prouty ’17 of Woodstock who majors in Visual Arts and presented artwork titled “Freedom, Liberty And Arms.”

Benjamin Rumrill ’18 of Pomfret Center who majors in Biology and presented a poster titled “The Effect of Microgravity on the Growth and Function of Neural Cells.”

Devin Stanley ’21 of Dayville who majors in Secondary Education and presented a poster titled “How Does Economy Influence the Global Food Crisis?”

 

Students

PUTNAM — Local students Dimitri Key and Lindsay Roberts, from Putnam High School, were two of the 297 top Connecticut seniors who excel in the arts that were honored at the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS) High School Outstanding Arts Awards Banquet.

The CAS Outstanding Arts Awards Banquet annually recognizes two seniors in each member high school for their outstanding ability in the performing or visual arts. The students are selected by their school to receive this honor. The banquet, with over 1,400 in attendance, is sponsored by Jostens and Bearingstar Insurance.

Superintendent William Hull said, “We are thrilled that two of our students were recognized for their ability.  The arts in the district have been and continue to be an important part of a well-rounded program for all students.”
