PUTNAM— The Putnam Science Academy’s brand new boys’ varsity soccer team walked away with a 1-0 win in the scrimmage with Pomfret School Sept. 7.
Sophomore Victor Reis scored the lone goal and first ever goal in program history just before the half. Putnam Science Academy went on the road to face St. Andrew’s School Sept. 12.
With 21 student athletes from more than 10 different countries on the squad, Head Coach Ivan Damulira knew he would have his hands full. “It hasn’t been as hard as I thought it would be” Damulira said with a smile. “Soccer brings these kids together and their styles are all very unique and different. Getting them to commit to team ball and play my style of soccer that I’m trying to coach to them has been one of the bigger challenges.”
With students from Brazil, Spain, Ghana, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Dominican Republic just to name a few, communication is key not only on the field but in the locker room as well. “I prefer an open door policy with my team.” Damulira added, “I encourage the kids to help one another on and off the field and it’s been great, we have great chemistry.”
