Info fair a success
PUTNAM — The third annual Senior Information Fair held Oct. 10 was an overwhelming success, according to organizers.
The Putnam Commission on Aging sponsored the event which offered an opportunity for vendors of senior services to reach more than 100 seniors who attended.
Therese Horvath who represented TEEG in Thompson, said, “It was a fabulous opportunity for the elderly as well as businesses being able to network.” Thirty four vendors presented their services. The Alzheimer’s Association, Senior Resources and Veteran’s Services from Congressman Joe Courtney’s office were able to share with seniors resources which are available statewide. Laurie McElwee from the Eastern CT Transportation Consortium spoke to seniors about the transportation voucher program. Transportation has been reported to be one of the greatest challenges for seniors in this area.
Local vendors were also able to share their information including the Center for Bone and Joint Care, local nursing homes, the Danielson Veteran’s Coffeehouse, Putnam Home Medical and QVCC’s Learning in Retirement Program as well as many others. Housing alternatives, education, and health services were the focus of this year’s event. Feedback from vendors and seniors alike was very positive. Kristine Johnson from the Alzheimer’s Association wrote, “We enjoyed today. It was my first time attending and we had good conversations and outreach with attendees.”
Flu shots were also available from the Big Y Pharmacy in Danielson. Pharmacist Brent Stanton was on hand to administer the flu shot to help keep seniors healthy throughout the season. Linda Colangelo from the Northeast Department of Health also spoke on Fall Prevention and offered blood pressure screening.
The commission thanked Father David from St. Mary Church for the use of the hall for this event.
